save

1) To conserve or prevent the wasting of. 节省

Save electricity by turning off the lights when you leave the room.

当你离开房间的时候，关灯节电。

save water节水

save energy节能

2) To store for future use. 把某物保留下来，以备他用

Let's save the packaging in case we need to send the product back.

我们把包装先留着吧，万一要退货呢。

He always saves extra chopsticks when he orders takeout.

他每次点外卖时总把多余的筷子存起来备用。

save money 存钱

3) To write a file to disk or other storage medium. 将一个文件记录到存储盘或其他媒介上

Where did I save that document? I can't find it on the desktop.

4) To help (somebody) to survive, or rescue (somebody or something) from harm.   拯救、营救某人／某物

She was saved from drowning by a passer-by.

rescue

1）rescue在课文中的意思：

When you rescued your trousers, did you find the note was whiter than white?

1）可专门指对于船只、船员的救援。

注意这个词有两种时态的指向：

a. 危险发生后第一时间的救援

We only managed to salvage two ships from the sea storm.

b. 木已成舟之后的事后补救措施: 打捞

the salvage of the Titanic shipwreck

对泰坦尼克号残骸的打捞行动。

c. 抽象的含义:挽回。可换成通用词save

redeem

1）基本含义：挽回，redeem oneself

He has a chance to redeem himself after last week's mistakes.

他有机会弥补上星期犯下的错误。

2）高级含义：对灵魂的拯救、救赎。比如，

redeem sb. from sin 将某人从罪恶中救赎出来

redeem one’s soul 救赎某人的灵魂

mutilate：

1）由于事故等导致当事人的身体严重致残。

3.  feed…to…

1) feed food to…给谁谁喂食

2) feed sth. to a machine

4. chew up里看up

up adv. 描述前方动作的“完成性”

chew 咀嚼—>表示过程

chew up 嚼完嚼烂—>强调结果。

类似表达: drink up喝完、饮完；eat up吃完。

5. contain / hold / include 区分

1) hold 指容纳某一数量的人或事物，强调包容、容纳、承载的能力。

This car can hold four people.这辆车可以坐4个人。

This hall can hold 800 people. 这个大厅可以容纳800人。

2) contain不强调容积容纳能力，而是突出装的具体是什么东西，比如

This bookshelf can hold150 books but now it only contains60.

这个书架能装下150本书, 不过现在上面只有60本。

3) include 包括，侧重整体涵盖部分

This bookshelf can hold 150 books but now it only contains 60 which include 20 new novels. 这个书架能装下150本书, 不过现在上面只有60本, 其中包括20本新小说。

6.  ash, ashes, dust

Imagine their dismay when they found a beautifully-cooked wallet and notes turned to ash!

Jane在不知情的状况下，用微波炉煮了晚饭，连同那装着3000英镑的钱包一起煮了。两人发现后可沮丧了，因为钱包煮花了不说，里面的纸币也全都化成灰了。

1)ash 灰烬, 指经过燃烧后剩下的灰;

dust指地表的土壤经过风吹扬起的细小颗粒，覆盖在我们的地板上、家具上的“灰尘”。

2)ash可以用作复数名词ashes，特指“骨灰”Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
