The teacher stood by the side and watched me play,

老师站旁边看我弹

listened to the notes and felt very bewildered:

听音，感觉很纳闷：

> bewildered [bɪ'wɪldəd]  

adj.困惑的;不知所措的;晕眩的;混乱的

Eg. With a bewildered look on his face he asked me what just happened.

他一脸迷惑地问我刚才发生了什么事。

Eg. I was bewildered by your words. 

我被你的话搞得糊涂了。

Eg. He was bewildered by her smile. 

他被她的笑迷惑了。

bewilder [bɪˈwɪldɚ]  

vt.使迷惑;使为难;使手足无措;使变糊涂

Eg. So many questions bewilder me. 

这么多的问题困扰着我。

what was being played was correct, but why does it sound different from the score?

弹出来对是对，但是为什么跟乐谱又不一样？

The teacher then asked me, how did you practise?

老师就问我，你是怎么练的？

Do you look at the music stave for the left hand?

你有没有看左手的五线谱？

> stave [steɪv]

n.棍；棒；木柱；五线谱（美国英语用staff）

v.延缓；给(桶)装板；给…换桶板；拆去…的桶板

Eg. A stave is usually used as a weapon.

一根棍棒常常被用来作为武器。

stave off 暂时挡住（坏事）；延缓，推迟

Eg. To stave off disaster we could only look to them. 

要阻挡灾难来临，我们只能指望他们了。

Eg. When you plan to be out all day, bring along your own snacks to stave off hunger. 

如果你打算出去一整天，带上你自己的零食来抵御饥饿。

I said no. I found each one by myself one by one.

我说没有，是我自己一个一个找的

I wouldn't tell them that I did look at it; 

我不会说我看了

if I didn't look at it, then I didn't look at it.

没看就是没看

At the start, the teacher felt that this kid had his own mind,

刚开始老师觉得这小孩还挺有想法的

but doing this once, twice, thrice, the teacher would no longer want to teach you.

但是一次、两次、三次老这样的话，老师就不想教你了

Both my piano teachers taught me for four lessons before they stopped,

我的两任钢琴老师一共上了四堂课就不教了

and so I only learnt four formal school-styled music lesson,

我也就学了四次学院派的正规课

and “messed it up” because of myself,

还被自己给“搞砸”了

> mess [mɛs]  

n.混乱;困境;食堂;肮脏

vt.弄脏;搞砸;给…供膳

vi.把事情弄糟;制造脏乱

Eg. Your room is in a mess, please tidy it up. 

你的房间那么乱，收拾一下吧。

Eg. I've made such a mess of my life. 

我把自己的生活弄得一团糟。

mess up 搞乱;弄乱，弄脏;搅乱

Eg. She used to mess up the floor and I had to clean up after her. 

她过去常常把地板弄得很脏乱，而我不得不为她清理干净。

so my basic piano skills were never quite standard.

所以我的弹琴基本功一直不太标准

I don't know how other people practised,

我不知道别人是怎么学怎么练的

but I felt from the beginning to the end,

但我始终觉得

that however good the tunes were on the score,

乐谱上的音再好

> tune [tju:n]

n.曲调；和谐；心情

vt.调整；使一致；为…调音

vi.调谐；协调

Eg. He played a tune on the violin. 

他用小提琴演奏了一首曲子。

in/out of tune with sth. 与…协调/不协调

Eg. Guitar plays in tune with piano. 

吉他与钢琴合奏很协调。

Eg. Her singing often gets out of tune. 

她唱歌爱走调儿。

they still were not as good as the sounds the ear could hear directly.

也不及耳朵在当下听到的声音好

When listening to songs since I was still very little. 

我从很小的时候听歌

I would remember the nice-sounding melodies in my mind,

就会把好听的旋律记在脑子里

then find them one by one on the keyboard.

然后在琴键上一个一个地找出来

When I got older, and properly went to learn how to play,

等到大了，真正去学习弹奏

I still couldn't change this definite process of turning sounds back into sounds.

也还是改不了这种一定要让声音还原为声音的过程

I am very sure that in the instant when a finger makes contact with the keyboard,

我很确认那个在手指触碰琴键的当下

when every note produces a sound, our ears can hear it,

每一个音符发出声音的时候我们耳朵能够听到

and the pores on our bodies can feel the sudden shockwaves that travel through the air.

身上毛孔也能够感受到来自空气中突然而至的震动感

> pore [pɔr, por]  

n.毛孔;气孔;细孔

vi.细看;钻研;凝视

Eg. The sunshine in the midday is so warm, you seem to feel that every pore of your body is breathing deeply.

中午的阳光暖暖的，仿佛身上的每一个毛孔都在尽情地呼吸。

pore over 仔细打量，认真研读

Eg. We spent hours poring over instructions. 

我们花了数小时仔细阅读说明书。

These shocking sensations, are more vivid than each note on the music score,

这种震动感，比乐谱上的一个个符号更生动 

> vivid [ˈvɪvɪd]  

adj.清晰的；生动的；鲜艳的；栩栩如生的

Eg. A vivid picture is present to our eye. 

一幅栩栩如生的画面出现在我们眼前。

Eg. I have a vivid memory of first time we met. 

我对我们的第一次见面有清晰的记忆。

Eg. Marine fish have beautiful vivid colours. 

海鱼有鲜艳漂亮的色彩。

they are alive.

它们是活生生的
