Hello, my name is Joanna Roper and I'm the special envoy for gender equality based in London. And I've been in this role since April 2017. It's the first time that we've had a special envoy for gender equality.
And my role is several fold really, it's to make sure that we're talking across government, it's about projecting gender equality through our foreign and security policy as much as our development policy, but we work very closely with other parts of the UK government.
So I'm here in India as part of the UK delegation for the ASEAN-China dialogue taking place this week. And I'm really looking forward to the panel that I'll be talking to later today on women's leadership within this century.
But I also have a surrounding programme. I'm meeting the minister for women and children, minister Alina. I'm also engaging with young leaders, achieving scholars, business leaders to understand the challenges here in India and how the UK and India can work together.
And of course one of the big priorities for India is also education with a big campaign taking place to educate one's daughter, and that sits really closely with the sorts of things that the UK is trying to achieve globally as well.
The UK is one of a growing number of countries that has an ambassador for women and girls or for gender equality, and I'm really proud that the UK is part of this growing number of countries, that's really putting a premium.
But making sure that gender equality is at the heart of our foreign policy, bringing together diplomacy, defense, development and also our domestic work, because there's plenty that takes place domestically that the UK is leading on that we can share and learn from other partners too.
You can argue that the rights of women have come a very, very long way in recent years, and that's true. We see phenomenal women in positions of leadership, in the media, in government, in politics, in business, in law, lots and lots of other sectors, but we know that there are still very many challenges out there.
The rights of women in some parts of the world to access education, for example, over 130 million girls are not able to access a quality education. And we don't think that's right and that's why the UK is putting such a store, such a premium on girls' education.
We've also worked very closely with partners on particularly for 2020 the women peace and security agenda. This year is the 20th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which first 20 years ago, first acknowledged the role of women and the impacts of conflict on women and girls, but also the role that women can play in conflict resolution and peacekeeping operations.
I'm also proud that the UK is leading the way on preventing sexual violence in conflict. An initiative that was launched in 2012 with then foreign for secretary lord William Hague and special envoy Angelina Jolie.
It's still a priority for the UK, looking at how we can tackle the conflict related sexual violence, how we can bring survivors to have access to justice and bring perpetrators to account, and how we tackle the issues around stigma and ostracism as survivors return to their community.
