That’s easy. International Women’s Day this year will be celebrated on Sunday, the 8th of March and that’s a global celebration around the world.

What is International Women’s Day?

Well, I think it’s a day that we can celebrate progress, we can celebrate the contributions that 50% of the population have fought the world, but also I think it’s a day of recognizing that there’s still a little bit more to go.

我认为今天是我们可以庆祝进步的一天，我们可以庆祝占全球人口一半的女性为世界做出贡献，但这个日子也让我们认识到还有更长的路要走。

What is the theme for International Women’s Day?

国际妇女节的主题是什么？

This year it’s all about being Each For Equal and it’s being celebrated by this hand signal and it’s really about trying to celebrate progress, contributions, but also the challenges that we’re still facing to ensure that 50% of the population’s voices, needs, contributions and experiences are not overlooked.

今年的主题是“人人平等”，通过这个手势来庆祝，这是为了庆祝进步和贡献，也是我们仍然面临的挑战，以确保占世界人口一半的女性的声音、需求、贡献和经验不被人们忽视。

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

For me, it’s one day of the year where we can really think about the role and contribution for women around the world. You know, 25 years it’s the Beijing Declaration and platform for action, 20 years is the first UN Security Council resolution on women peace and security. We know that a huge amount of progress has been made but there’s still more to go.

Well, really that’s down to you. You can tweet, you can hold events, you can bring people together, you can do networking or mentoring events, breakfast, lunches, dinner. Men and women, of course, all welcome in however you want to celebrate International Women’s Day.

What is the UK government doing to help women’s rights?

I’m really proud of the fact that the UK government is really committed to supporting women both domestically and in the international field as well. A big part what we do is trying to promote girls’ education.

We know that 130 million girls around the world are just not getting the education and the schooling that they need and deserve, so we have a cross government campaign, leave no girl behind to try and bring some of those girls, many of those girls into the classroom to get the education that will really serve them well for their future.

Domestically too, we’ve been supporting women coming back into the workplace, trying to see more women in senior decision making positions in companies and boards and of course, we launched the gender pay gap legislation just a couple of years ago, too. So there’s a lots going on. The department for international development also has a strategy for women and girls which guides what we do too, so plenty to take a look at there.
