      Australia is located to the south of Asia, and between the Indian Ocean on the west, and the Pacific Ocean on the east. It is sometimes called “the land down under” because it lies in the Southern Hemisphere（南半球）almost halfway around the world from Great Britain, which was its mother country in the colonial era（殖民时代）. Australia is the world’s sixth largest country, yet it has a population of only about 20 million. It is the flattest, most arid（干旱的）, and least populated of the inhabited（有人居住的） continents.

      As a result of millions of isolation from Asia, Australia has many plant and animal species that are found nowhere else in theworld. The most famous animals are kangaroos（袋鼠）and koalas（树袋熊）.

      Australia is one of the most urbanized countries in the world. Canberra is its capital.
