节选自爱尔兰作家奥斯卡·王尔德的短篇小说《模范百万富翁》的首段。

The original

Unless one is wealthy there is no use in being a charming fellow. Romance is the privilege(特权)of the rich, not the profession of the unemployed. The poor should be practical and ordinary. It is better to have a permanent(永久的)income than to be attractive. These are the great truths of modern life which Hughie Erskine(人名) never realized. Poor Hughie! Intellectually(智力上), we must admit, he was not of much importance. He never said a clever or even an ill-natured(心地不良的)thing in his life. But then he was wonderfully good-looking, with his brown hair, his clear-cut face, and his grey eyes. He was as popular with men as he was with women, and he had every quality except that of making money.
