      The Second World War, which broke out on September 1, 1939, was the result of struggle between the great powers for control of the world and military expansion（扩张）of the countries of Nazi（纳粹党的） Germany, Fascist（法西斯的）Italy and militarist（军国主义的）Japan. It was a global military conflict which organized into two opposing military alliances：the Axis（轴心国）, that is, the fascist states; and the Allies（同盟国）, the anti-fascist states. It spread to the whole world and involved all the great powers in the world.

      The war ended in 1945, over seventy million people, the majority of whom were civilians, were killed, making it the deadliest conflict in human history. After the Axis was defeated, the Soviet Union（苏联）and the United States emerged（显示）as the world’s superpowers, and it set the stage for the Cold War, which lasted for the next 45 years.
