Spring Equinox(2)

It seemed like at the age of 13 or 14, every boy would be obsessed with playing computer games. Other than my liking to play them, if I didn't play computer games, I would not be able to communicate with my friends, because everyone was playing them, and our conversations were also about games. In my memory, even those straight-A students were playing them in private.Of course, without exception, the adults all thought that playing computer games was really not good, it was the hallmark of a bad child and it was the enemy to any improvement in our studies. Therefore, hoping that they would readily give me money for computer games was simply a pipe dream.

One night, my father saw this news on TV. When I came home from playing ball and sat down on the sofa stinky and drenched in sweat, father sat down in front of me very calmly and said, go take part in the competition, if you enter the first round I'll give you 50 yuan, if you enter the second round I'll give you 200 yuan, if your luck is good and you make it into the third round, I'll give you 500...wow, 500 yuan! That’s basically a huge sum! At that time my eyes lit up, I thought, it’s really not bad, just go for a round, singing a song is simple, the money l get from this is just enough to buy the game equipment I've wanted for a long time. I will strive for 50 yuan!

Today’s key points:

Spring Equinox(2)

It seemed like at the age of 13 .or 14,

every boy would be obsessed with playing computer games.

> obsess [əbˈsɛs,ɑb-]

vt.

Eg. He’s obsessed by music.

Eg. She’s completely obsessed with him.

Eg. I must admit that music obsess me.

Other than my liking to play them, if I didn't play computer games,

> liking  [ˈlaɪkɪŋ]

Eg. He bought me records to encourage my liking for music

Eg. The child had a liking for apples.

Eg. This pair of shoes is very much to my liking.

I would not be able to communicate with my friends,

because everyone was playing them, and our conversations were also about games.

In my memory, even those straight-A students were playing them in private.

> private [ˈpraɪvɪt]

adj.

Eg. It's just that it's something very private, and I simply can't talk about it.

Eg. She has always been a rather private person.

Of course, without exception,

the adults all thought that playing computer games was really not good,

it was the hallmark of a bad child and it was the enemy to any improvement in our studies.

Therefore, hoping that they would readily give me money for computer games was simply a pipe dream.

> readily [ˈrɛdəli,ˈrɛdli]

adv.

Eg. When I was invited to the party, I readily accepted.

Eg. The chips are readily available in supermarket.

> pipe [paɪp]

Eg. The water leaked from the pipe.

Eg. Peter's idea of becoming a movie star is only a pipe dream.

One night, my father saw this news on TV.

When I came home from playing ball and sat down on the sofa stinky and drenched in sweat,

father sat down in front of me very calmly and said,

go take part in the competition,

if you enter the first round I'll give you 50 yuan,

if you enter the second round I'll give you 200 yuan,

if your luck is good and you make it into the third round, I'll give you 500...

wow, 500 yuan! That’s basically a huge sum!

At that time my eyes lit up, I thought, it’s really not bad,

just go for a round, singing a song is simple,

the money l get from this is just enough to buy the game equipment I've wanted for a long time.

I will strive for 50 yuan!

> strive [straɪv]

vi.

Eg. Our general objective is to strive to build a great socialist country.

Eg. We must strive for our country constantly!
