1.slip n. 小错误

注意：slip作为动词表示“滑倒”，比如：I slipped on the ice.我在冰上滑倒了。

口误：a slip of the tongue ：slip引申为小错误。

It was a slip of the tongue.

笔误：a slip of the pen：It was a slip of the pen.

a typo =（a small mistake in a typed or printed text）

Sorry, it was just a typo.

区别：slip, mistake,error, blunder

Slip = a small mistake

Mistake = A mistake is an action or an opinion that is not correct.

Error比mistake更正式

场景举例：

There must an error in your calculation. 

System Error，而不是system mistake

I made a terrible mistake.

Watching that movie was a big mistake.（不是error）

blunder n.

A blunder is a stupid mistake caused by carelessness, which could have serious results

A last-minute blunder made by the goal-keeper cost them the game.

2.queue n.（等候的）队v.排队

注意，在英国主要用queue

To buy a concert ticket, I stood/waited in a queue for over an hour.

= To buy a concert ticket, I queued for over an hour.

在美国，排队主要用的是line   

stand/wait in line  

During the World Expo in Shanghai, people had to wait in line for hours to enter the exhibition hall.  

注意：排队是wait in line（不用冠词），如果具体描述一个队特征，比如长队：wait in a long line      

3.dull  adj.枯燥，乏味的

When you describe someone or something as dull, you mean they are not interesting or exciting.

* The game was pretty dull.

*The movie was so dull that half of the audience fell asleep

Expressions meaning “very boring”

as dull as dishwater 

The movie was as dull as dishwater

as dry as dust   

Reading the book is as dry as dust .

Heinrich Heine：

“I fell asleep reading a dull book, and I dreamed that I was reading on, so I awoke from sheer boredom.”

注意：sheer adj. = complete, pure   

boredom n.乏味，厌烦

核心含义的引申：

a dull sky

The lady’s eyes were dull.

4.advertiser  n. 登广告者，广告商（在本课中指“报幕员”）

An advertiser is a person or company that advertises something.

advertise v.  为…做广告

记忆：ad-= to，toward  +  词根vert=turn，+动词后缀ise

advertise a product

advertise a service

advertise a brand

什么是最好的广告?

In a free market, advertising is one of the major ways to communicate with customers.

advertisement = ad  n.广告 （指具体的一则广告）

5.awkward adj.  尴尬的，紧张，不舒服

1）尴尬的，让人难堪的

If you describe something as awkward, it makes you feel embarrassed.

令人尴尬的问题an awkward question

He never stops asking awkward questions .

一个尴尬的场合an awkward situation

Humor can help people over an awkward situation.

听小故事：

Winston Churchill: “You see, Mr. President, I have nothing to hide.”

引申义：

2）紧张，不舒服= not relaxed or comfortable

Amy likes dancing. But if someone is watching her dance, she will feel awkward.

3）笨拙的，别扭的

Peter had gained so much weight that he was too clumsy and awkward when he was dancing.

4）不方便的

an awkward time (= a time that is not convenient )

I’m sorry to call at such an awkward time but I really need your help now.
