Fish and chips is a popular dish in Britain which consists of fried fish in batter served with chips.

It is a common take-away food in the United Kingdom.

Fish and chips first appeared in the UK in the 1860s.

In Britain, there are around 10,000 fish and chips shops.

3.overfish  v.过度捕捞（一个水域或者一种鱼类）

This part of the ocean has been overfished.  

As the lake has been overfished, fishing has been banned.

Over-表示过度，过于

overeat v. = eat too much：

Whenever the girl feels depressed , she tends to overeat.

oversleep v. = sleep too much  

I forgot to set my alarm clock last night so I overslept.   

overwork v. = work too much

Overwong is harmful to your heath.

4.terrify  v.恐吓，使害怕

近义词： scare / frighten

Sam is terrified of heights.  

= Sam is frightened of heights

= Sam is scared of heights.

词根:  terr-让人恐惧  = fill with fear, frighten  

Terrify：terr-恐惧+ -ify动词词尾

terror n.

terrible adj.

terrific adj. That is a terrific idea！

为啥terrific不是恐怖的？

5.wit  n.

1）  说话机智风趣，妙语连珠的能力（通常单数）

Wit is the ability to say or write things that are clever and amusing

Ji Xiaolan had a quick wit .

A talk show host is supposed to have a quick wit.

witty adj.机智风趣

The host is witty.

Mark Twain was famous for his witty remarks.

2）（复数） 指“理智，神志” 

Your wits refer to your ability to think quickly and make the right decisions

口语中的表达：frighten/scare/terrify sb out of their wits = to frighten someone very much

The figure in the haunted house terrified the kids out of their wits.

The horror movie scared us out of our wits. = The horror movie frightened us to death.

6.variety 

来自动词：vary v. /'veərɪ/ = change

1） 品种 

A variety of something is a type of it.

The river has more than 50 varieties of fish.  

The garden has more than 100 varieties of plants.

2）表示“各种各样”  

a variety of ...  = different （kinds of）

造句：A smart phone can be used in a variety of ways.

People learn English for a variety of reasons.

The small town has a variety of restaurants.

3）Variety也可以指“多样性和变化”

Variety is the spice of life.

7.factor   n.因素

A factor is one of the things that influence or cause a situation.

注意：词根“fact”表示“make, do”，factor字面意思就是“doer，maker”

同根词：manufacture v.制造：manu=hand, fact=make
