Frinley.

This summer, I paid a visit to a tiny village called Frinley.

It was hard to imagine that such a teeny-tiny village was overflowing with tourists.

But what has attracted people is neither beautiful scenery nor rich historical legacy, but a mysterious tree which is said to be under a curse.

Planted near the church half a century ago, the tree has unexpectedly gained an evil reputation only in recent years.

It is said that anyone who touches the tree will have bad luck, and those who dare to pick a leaf will be struck down by sudden death.

According to many villagers, the tree has claimed a number of lives.

Anxious about becoming potential victims, people have urged the vicar to have the tree cut down as soon as possible.

But so far, the vicar has refused to do it.

Why?

He has pointed out that ever since the tree got such an evil reputation, the number of tourists has increased dramatically.

As curious tourists from all over the country flood into the village to see the “cursed tree”, it has become a “cash cow” for the church, and even the whole village.

Despite all these rumors, the tourists have been touching the tree and even cutting their names on the tree-trunk to show their bravery.

Some people even proudly posted videos of themselves hugging the tree on social media.

Those videos quickly went viral, making the “cursed tree” even more famous.

Ironically, it is the bad reputation of the tree that has turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

When you experience something unfortunate, it could be a blessing in disguise.

Here is another story about a blessing in disguise.

Once upon a time, there was a King who was fond of hunting.

He had his leg broken after falling from his horse.

“Don't worry, Your Majesty. It could be a blessing in disguise.”

Hearing the minister’s words, the king was enraged as he thought the minister delighted in his misfortune, so he put the minister in jail.

A few months later, the King once again went hunting with a number of attendants.

They got lost in a forest and were attacked by cannibals.

The cannibals captured all the King’s attendants but spared the King.

Thought the cannibals ate people, they never hurt the disabled.

Realizing his falling from the horse was indeed a blessing in disguise, the King ordered the release of the minister.

“It was not only a blessing in disguise for Your Majesty, but also for me.

If I hadn’t been put in jail , I would have gone hunting with you and would have been killed by the cannibals,”the minister said.

Disaster is where good fortune rests.

Good fortune is where disaster lurks.

“What seems to us as bitter trials are often blessings in disguise.”

-- Oscar Wilde
