Hello my name's Stephen Fry and I was at Queens' from '78 to '81. A very long time ago, but not  in the history of a very old college, a college I always felt large enough for one to be able  to lose oneself and small enough for there to be a genuine sense of specialness and family, I'll almost say.

One recognizes one's fellow Queens' people everywhere and we all feel, I think, that we shared something rather special within Cambridge. There are many colleges and they all have different characters and histories and so forth.

While Queens' is perhaps one of the most beautiful of all the colleges, I say this and I kind of mean it, that were it a brutalist 1960s series of breeze blocks and drippy concrete but with the same people and the same ethos, I would be quite happy to go there because that's what you take away with you.

It's a place, Queens', that I think, faster than other colleges, has embraced the need to move on, to develop, to change. In my last year, we finally became a co-educational establishment, thank goodness.

And through the recent years I've had the honour of being an Honorary Fellow of the college. I've  seen just how important the pastoral life, the happiness, the the balance, the fairness,  the equity, the diversity, all these words that can seem you know just like box-ticking words mean everything to the College.

Nobody, as far as I can tell, who runs the college , none of the Fellows,  nor the President himself have any wish other than for Queens' to be filled with people from all over Britain and indeed the world who, regardless of their backgrounds, have something to offer and  will be given something to offer by the College.

It's a warm, friendly, welcoming place. It has  room for for growth and that's what I found. I look back on my time at Queens' and I realise that when I arrived, I was a confused and weird and frightened person convinced that everybody around  me was smarter and had had access to some sort of lesson in how to live that I had never had.

But I discovered that I could find ways to express and fulfill myself and I was given permission,  as it were, to live as myself. The academic work, yes it was important, but it was part  of a whole package and that's what makes Queens' very, very special.

If you're an alumnus like me,  or an alumna, then I urge you. If you feel that the College has made a difference in your life,  your personality and the way you look at the world and what the world has given to you  since your time there, if you feel maybe that you owe it something, you owe the College something. I feel that and I hope you will too and I hope you'll be very generous. All the best!
