I have it on the highest authority there is that I am, and always will be, a Hufflepuff. And I'm proud to be a Hufflepuff, I may say.

What’s your favourite magical creature?

I did like Buckbeak enormously. And I think, like a lot of people, I just have a fantasy of just getting on the back of some enormous flying beast and flying away and looking down on the world. And I think that's the thing that most thrilled me.

Are there any animals found in the Muggle world that should be in the magical world?

The extraordinary thing about nature is that no matter how hard we try and imagine a peculiar animal, nature has got there first and it's more peculiar. It can be an insect that, you know, rolls up dung. Well, I mean what writer would come up with something like a dung beetle?

And yet, these are beautiful animals that do extraordinary work that helps the area in which they live. Things like that which you feel really do. They've slipped through the curtain between the wizarding world and the Muggle world somehow.

Our ancestors thousands of years ago would have happened on dinosaur fossils. And they must have wondered what they were. And they had no way of knowing if they saw a skull of some huge and frightening beast. They had no way of knowing that beast was extinct. Extinct for millions of years.

As far as they knew, it was around the next mountain and buried in a cave. And that suddenly made sense as to why there are dragon myths all over the world. Everywhere there seems to be this idea that there were once beasts like that.

Why do you think the wizarding world is so loved today?

When I was young, we didn't really think about myths, and dragons and fantasy nearly as much as we did as computing became big. That's when, you know, Lord of the Rings and things like that, and of course, Harry Potter really made their mark on the world.

At exactly the time that silicon valley was exploding. And I don't think that's a coincidence. I think it's a reaction. We want to... Of course we love our toys, our shiny gadgets. But we want to return to a world too, where it is not everything is explained by mathematics, and geeks, and programming, and coding. But there's another kind of magic. That's my theory.

What would your Boggart be?

My Bogart would be an enormous moth. I know moths are beautiful and I know they're lovely, but for some reason I've always been terrified of them. I think because when I was young, all I did was read through the night. Because I found it difficult to get to sleep.

And it was in the countryside and were very hot at the top of the house where my bed was. So I'd open the window to make it cooler. But if you open the window and you've got the light on to read, moths come in.

And they get in my hair! I just freaked out. And they were big and leathery somehow. And Agh! So a huge moth I'm afraid would just completely make me turn to jelly.

Which character in the wizarding world are you most drawn to?

We all want a mentor. Don't we? Even, believe me, when you're as old as I am! You think it would be nice to have a mentor. Someone you could say, “What should I do now? And give me advice.”

Someone you could trust. Because we live in a world where there aren't many people we can look up to and trust. David Attenborough is about the only one, when you think about it. So, maybe that's the answer I think. Dumbledore.

Which two characters would you choose to help you defeat Voldmort?

I think it's no surprise that the... Some of the simpler characters. I don't think the way to beat evil is sophistication. I think the way is simple goodness. And so, Hagrid and Neville Longbottom are heroic. And Harry is heroic.

Sheer goodness. Sheer stoutness of heart, as they used to say, is really what's required in the world. Not sophistication. So those are the two I'd choose. I think I'd choose Harry and Hagrid.

How can we change our world for the better?

The loss of any species is a kind of crime against nature and time. Extinction is built into the world as we have it. There's no question about that. We were talking about dinosaurs. They went extinct and it wasn't our fault.

Somehow a new twist has happened in the history of evolution. That we have a consciousness that is aware, and counts, and lists and gives names to all of nature. We have this gift. This gift to to be curious and to inquire. And it's a vital gift. And it means we know what's happening.

So we can change our behavior and be a guardian of creation. It's an arrogant thing to be, perhaps. But it's the duty we owe to the way we've evolved. And I think it's so important that we use that knowledge. We use that curiosity to do what we can to be, as I say, those guardians. So that's my hope.
