Once upon a time, in the country of Switzerland, where the mountains had steep and rocky sides that were covered with trees and snow, there were two shining glaciers.
In the summertime, strangers from all parts of the world came to see the glaciers. They crossed snow-covered mountains and deep valleys just to see them.
On both sides of the mountain path stood little wooden houses where many children lived. The children ran out to sell toy houses to the travellers. One boy sold the toy houses his grandfather carved from their home on the mountain.

Grandfather: One day, Rudy, you will be the one to carve these houses. But, first you must grow big and strong and learn many things.
Rudy: Like what, Grandfather?
Grandfather: Well, you must learn responsibility.
Rudy: Responsi- What does that mean?
Grandfather: It means that you answer for your own choices and actions.
Rudy: How do I learn that?
Grandfather: Well, you will need to have more responsibilities. I think it’s time that you begin to take care of the goats. Now, you will need to be a good climber to be a good goat-keeper.
Rudy: A good climber! I’m a great climber Grandfather. I like to look for the birds’ nests at the top of the high trees.

Grandfather：Yes, Rudy. You are bold and daring indeed.


Rudy had never played with the other children and did not like selling the carved houses either. He did it to help his grandfather, but he would much rather be climbing the mountains or sitting by his grandfather and listening to his tales of long ago.
Rudy learned many things from his grandfather. But, he learned from other things too, like the dog that belonged to the house and the tomcat that taught him to climb.

Rudy: One day, I’m going to climb up to see the glaciers myself!
Grandfather: You must be careful with the glaciers, Rudy. They are not like other mountains or streams. The glaciers are frozen ice - a castle of crystal for the Ice Maiden.
Rudy: Who is the Ice Maiden?
Grandfather: The Ice Maiden is the queen of the glaciers. She has the power to stop the flowing river in its course and freeze it to ice. Her powers can reach the tallest snow-covered mountain tops, where the boldest mountain climber has to cut footsteps in the ice.
Rudy: Wow! Has anyone seen the Ice Maiden?
Grandfather: Some say she’s a child of the air. But, others claim to have seen her skipping from iceberg to iceberg, with her long, snow-white hair flowing around her, and her dark robe glittering like the waters of the lake.
Rudy: Why does she freeze everything? Why all the glaciers and icebergs and snow?
Grandfather: No one knows for certain of course. Some believe that she uses her power for evil, to crush the green earth.
Rudy: What do you believe, Grandfather?
Grandfather: My grandfather told me that the Ice Maiden once had a beautiful boy that was stolen from her. The boy tends goats on the mountains, always climbing higher and higher away from all the others, and she climbs after him.

Ice Maiden: It is almost summer. I will begin to melt soon. Have you brought the boy?
Vertigo: I cannot do it, Your Majesty. That monster of a cat has taught him her tricks. He has powers of his own.
Ice Maiden: Ha! He’s just a boy! What powers could he possibly have?
Vertigo: I don’t know, Your Majesty. Yet, my own powers cannot reach him.
Ice Maiden: Nonsense! There must be a way! Either you bring him to me, or I’ll do it myself! {Pause} Shh! Do you hear that?
Vertigo: What is it, Your Majesty? What do you hear?
Ice Maiden: Melting. Time is running out for us. Soon the good and loving spirits will be here.
Vertigo: You mean the daughters of the sunbeam?
Ice Maiden: Yes, nature’s spirits. They’ll bring flowers and sunrises and butterflies.
[Enter Spring Spirit]
Spring Spirit: Your Majesty, we know the plans you have for the boy. You shall not catch Rudy. My sisters and I will not let you have him. 
Ice Maiden: I have caught greater and stronger people than Rudy. I will have him.
Spring Spirit: It is almost summer .....
Ice Maiden: I still have time! The boy will be mine.

很久以前，在瑞士，山峦陡峭，遍布岩石，山顶覆盖着树木和白雪，两条闪闪发光的冰川清晰可见。
一到夏季，来自世界各地的人们都来观看冰川。他们越过白雪覆盖的山脉和深谷，只为一睹他们的风采。
山路两旁是小木屋，许多孩子住在那里。孩子们跑出去卖玩具屋给旅行者。一个男孩卖掉了他爷爷雕刻的玩具屋。
爷爷：鲁迪，有一天，你也会成为雕刻玩具屋的人。但是，首先你必须变得强大并且学习很多东西。
鲁迪：学什么呢，爷爷？
爷爷：嗯，你必须学会负责任。
鲁迪: 负责..... 那是什么意思？
爷爷：意思是你要为自己的选择和行为有担当。
鲁迪：我怎么学呢？
爷爷：你需要承担更多的责任。我觉得是时候开始照顾山羊了。现在，你需要成为一名优秀的登山者才能成为一名优秀的山羊饲养员。
鲁迪：一个优秀的登山者！我是一个伟大的登山者，祖父！我喜欢在高大的树顶上寻找鸟巢。

爷爷：是的，鲁迪。你确实很大胆。

鲁迪从来没有和其他孩子一起玩过，也不喜欢卖雕刻的玩具房子。他这样做只是为了帮助他的爷爷，但他更愿意爬山，或者坐在爷爷身边听他讲很久以前的故事。
鲁迪从他的爷爷那里学到了很多东西。但是，他也从其他东西中学到了其他的，比如狗狗猫猫的小伎俩。

鲁迪：总有一天，我要自己爬上去看看冰川！
爷爷：你必须小心冰川，鲁迪。它们不像其他山脉或溪流。冰川是冰冻的冰——冰少女的水晶城堡。
鲁迪：冰姑娘是谁？
爷爷：冰姑娘是冰川女王。她有能力阻止流动的河流，并将其冻结成冰。她的力量可以到达最高的白雪覆盖的山顶，最大胆的登山者都得在冰层里停下脚步。
鲁迪：哇！那有没有人见过冰姑娘？
爷爷：有人说她是空气之子。但是，其他人声称看到她从一个冰山跳到另一个冰山，雪白的长发飘动，黑色的长袍像湖水一样闪闪发光。
鲁迪：她为什么要把所有东西都冷冻起来？所有的冰川，冰山和雪？
爷爷：当然没人知道。有些人认为她利用她的力量作恶，粉碎了绿色的地球。
鲁迪：你相信什么，爷爷？
爷爷：我爷爷告诉我，冰姑娘曾经有一个漂亮的男孩，但后来被人掳走了。男孩在山上放羊，总是爬得很高，远离其他人，她就跟着他爬。

冰姑娘：快到夏天了，我很快就会开始融化。你把那男孩带来了吗？
属下：我做不到，陛下。那只猫精灵教会了他所有把戏。他有自己的神力。
冰姑娘：哈哈！他只不过是个男孩！他能有什么神力？
属下：我不知道，陛下。但是，我自己的力量却无法触及他。
冰姑娘：胡说八道！一定有办法！要么你带他来找我，要么我自己做！ {停顿}嘘！你听到了吗？
属下：怎么了，陛下？你听到什么？
冰姑娘：雪融化了。我们的时间不多了。很快，善良而充满爱心的春精灵就会来到这里。
属下：你是说阳光的女儿们？
冰姑娘：是的，自然之灵。他们会带来鲜花、日出和蝴蝶。
<春精灵进来>
春精灵：陛下，我们知道您对这小子的计划。单你不可能抓住鲁迪，我和我的姐妹们不会让你得逞。
冰姑娘：我抓到了比鲁迪更强大的人。我会拥有他的。
春精灵：快到夏天了……
冰姑娘：我还有时间！男孩将是我的。
