13 情态动词（上）

一、情态动词的概念

情态动词用于表示说话人的情绪、态度或语气，本身有一定的词义。它主要包括十三个词：分别是need ,dare, shall/should, will/would,ought to,must,have to，may/might ,can/could

二、情态动词的特点

1情态动词后面接动词原形

2除have to外，没有人称和数的变化

3情态动词只有现在时和过去时两种形式

4构成疑问句时，通常放在主语前面；构成否定句时，后面直接加not

5不能单独作谓语， 只能和其他动词原形一起构成谓语

三、情态动词的用法

1、首先我们来看can ,could 和be able to的用法

1）can表示现在的能力，could表示过去的能力

如他在十岁时就会讲法语。

He could speak French at the age of ten

我会说一点日语

I can speak a little Japanese

2)be able to 侧重通过努力做成某事的能力,有更多的时态形式

At last he was able to climb the mountain

最后他终于爬上了那座山。

3)can.could表示请求、允许。could

n, could 的语气更委婉，答语要用can

如 You can finish your work tomorrow,

你可以明天完成你的工作。

—Could you help me?你能帮助我吗？

—Yes.I can.是的。我可以。

4）can.could表示推测时，多用在否定句

和疑问句中，could的语气更弱一些

He cannot/can't be there.

他不可能在那儿。

He looks so young. He couldn't be over 50.

他看着很年轻，不可能超过50岁。

5)用在固定句型中

①can't help doing sth 禁不住做某事

She couldn't help laughing when she heard it

当她听说这件事时，禁不住大笑出来。

②can't but do sth 不得不做某事

I could not but walk there.

 我不得不走到那里。

③can't...too/enough无论...也不过分

You can't be too careful when writing

当写作时你再仔细也不为过。

2、may和might的用法

1)表示征求对方意见或允许，可与can替换

May/Can I use your dictionary for a moment?

我可以借你的词典用一下吗？

2)用在固定句型中

①May+主语+动词原形表示祝愿

May you succeed.祝你成功。

②MayMight well+动词原形意为“很可能……”

He looked so tired that he might well stay up

他看起来这么累，很可能熬夜了。

③May Might as well+动词原形意为“最好/不妨…·…”

We may as well stay where we are.

我们最好还是待在原处。

3)表示说话人的推断或猜测，认为某事可能是事实或可能会发生。may not表示“可能不”，can't表示“不可能”

Where's John? He may be at the library.

约翰在哪儿？他可能在图书馆。

4)在用may提问时，否定回答常用mustn't或may not表示“不行、不可以”

May I go now?我现在可以走吗

No,you mustn't不，不可以

注意哦，may be是情态动词may加be；maybe是副词，意为“或许”。
