我满心欢喜地把自己人生中的第一幅杰作展示给大人看，但是大人们根本无法理解。那么接下来我怎么做得呢？

But since the grown−upswere not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside ofthe boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly.

但是因为大人们不能理解它，我画了另外一张画。这里的 since 是因为的意思。那么另外一张是怎么样的呢？I drew the insideof the boa constrictor.我画了蟒蛇的内部，inside。这里的 drew 是过去时，这个动词的原形是draw。I drew the inside of the boa constrictor so that the grown−upscould see it clearly.  这样成人就能很清楚的看明白了。so that 是一个固定的用法，表示做一件事的“目的”。

They always need to havethings explained. My Drawing Number Two.

他们，也就是大人，总是需要解释。这一句似乎是对大人的抱怨，又很像是嘲讽。这里有 have something done. “需要别人做某事”。所以 have things explained 可以理解为：别人解释给成人听。类似 I have just had my hair cut. 这句话的意思是别人刚给我剪头。最后一句 My Drawing Number Two. 这里我们的有声书和原文有一点不同。原文是 My Drawing Number Two looked like this:

The grown-ups’ response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or theoutside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar.

这一次成人的反应是建议问把蟒蛇的图画放到一边，lay aside这个短语的意思是“把…放到一边”, whether from the inside or the outside，这个短语修饰 my drawings of boa constrictors，也就是说：无论是从里面的还是从外面。很显然 from the inside指的是 my Drawing Number Two, 而 from the outside 指的是my Drawing Number One. 大人们建议我暂且搁置自己的绘画，那么他们建议我干什么呢？and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic andgrammar. 他们建议我专心学习geography 地理，history 历史，arithmetic 算数，还有 grammar 语法。这些当然就是所谓的有用的知识。 devote to 是一个固定用法，意思是“投身于某事”。instead 是一个副词，不太好翻译，大概类似于汉语里的 “转而” 的意思。

That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career asa painter. I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One andmy Drawing Number Two.

这就是为什么，在六岁的时候，我放弃了当画家这一伟大的事业。这里，give up 意思是放弃。同时我们又看到了magnificent 这个词，在a magnificent career中，我们可以把 magnificent 理解为great，也就是“伟大的事业”。

这一句也是一个被动语态。dishearten 可以理解为让人感到沮丧，泄气。大人们不认可我的 Drawing Number one and Drawing Number Two，这让我感到很泄气。

Grown−ups never understand anything bythemselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explainingthings to them.

这些大人靠他们自己，靠他们自己，什么样也弄不懂。 tiresome 意思是“烦人的、让人疲惫的”。小孩总是需要给大人解释这个解释那个，这让小孩感到很疲惫，很厌烦。每当读到这一段，我教过的一些小学生都表示，这段说的真好，说出来他们的心声，他们还会跟我吐槽，说自己也有相似的经历。我想绝大部分人的童年中都会经历类似的沮丧，这也就是为什么很多人刚读到这本书的第一章，就会和作者产生极大的共鸣。

So then Ichose another profession, and learned to pilot airplanes.

所以后来，我只好选择了另外一个职业（profession），这个职业就是 pilot airplanes. 这里的 pilot 是动词，是“驾驶飞机”的意思。 pilot 也可以作名词，意思是“飞机驾驶员”。

I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been veryuseful to me.

紧接着，作者进一步介绍了一下自己的这个职业，世界各地差不多都飞到过。这里的 flown 是动词 fly 的过去分词。and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. 因为我驾驶飞机，所以地理学的知识对我有很大帮助。还记得上一段里大人们建议作者做什么吗？devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar. 这一句和上一段大人们建议他学习地理学 geography 对应上了。

At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona.If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.

这里 at a glance 是一个固定的说法，意思是“看一眼，瞥一眼”。distinguish 是分辨的意思。作者说：只要看一眼，我就能分辨出 China 中国和 Arizona 亚利桑那 。亚利桑那是美国西南部的一个州。那么，这里为什么要特别拿出 China 和 Arizona 呢？我的理解是这两个词押韵。如果换成 distinguish Finland from England 芬兰和英格兰, 又或者 distinguish Tanzania from California 坦桑尼亚和加利福尼亚，这也未尝不可。这里作者只是举了两个例子，用以说明自己的地理知识很好。如果一个人在夜里迷路（我想这里主要说的是如果一个飞行员夜晚迷路），那么这样的知识是非常有用的。所以，在这里作者的确也承认，大人们的一些建议是正确的。
