Hello, I'm Juliet Etchingham and I'm delighted to have become a patron of Anti-Slavery International.

Over the years, in my work as a journalist I've gradually become more and more drawn to stories of modern slavery. And what it actually means, I think it's a very difficult turn for people to really understand.

作为一名记者，在我多年的工作中，逐渐对现代奴隶制的故事越来越感兴趣。我觉得这对人们来说是一个很难理解的转变。

But when you've seen close up, personal stories of exploitation, forced labour, and sat in a room with women who've really given all of their hopes and dreams to somebody who've promised them.

但当你深入了解时，你会看到一些关于剥削、强迫劳工的个人故事；坐在房间里的女人，她们把所有的希望和梦想寄托在那个承诺过她的人的故事。

The earth really to take them to a different place. Perhaps in Europe, travelling across Africa to get there, to a dream of better life. Only to find that they are then forced into the labour, into sex work with their passports removed, their liberty removed, with mental changes as well as physical deprivation of liberty.

只要在地球上，他们就能被带到世界任何一个地方去。或许穿越非洲到达欧洲，去那里实现美好生活的梦想。结果却发现，他们被迫去劳动，沦为性工作者，护照被吊销，行动自由被剥夺，精神健康受影响，身体自由被剥夺。

You can't fail to be really affected by their stories. And it's one of the things that really drawn me to this, because I feel really strongly that once you've heard the personal story of somebody who's been trapped in modern slavery, whether it's some woman perhaps from Nigeria who's travelled to Italy, or even a young woman who's been trafficked between cities here in the UK. You can't pretend that you haven't heard those stories, and they stay with you.

So it's one of my really driving motivations as to why I'm passionate about raising the profile of this issue. And to be involved in the work of Anti-Slavery International which has this historical sweep of work in campaigning and raising awareness, and really engaging people with this as a modern scandal.
