上期回顾 

Hello everyone! Welcome back to bookworm reading time!欢迎回到《歌剧院的幽灵》！上一期中我们说到，the Opera Ghost向歌剧院的经理们索要每月20000法郎的巨款。被经理们毫不犹豫的拒绝了，他们认为这些都是玩笑joke，the Opera Ghost根本不存在。

同时，他们还遇到了另一个问题：歌剧的女主角生病了，那晚上的演出Faust怎么办呢？只能请年轻的演员Daaé来代替她演唱。Daaé究竟能否胜任当天的演出呢？让我们一起来啃书吧。

在上一期的最后，经理Firmin说‘Perhaps Daaé can sing better than La Charlotta. Who knows? ’ 他说中了。Christine的演出非常成功。All Paris talked about the new Margarita in Faust, the girl with the beautiful voice, the girl with the voice of an angel. They laughed and cried and called for more.

* beautiful voice: voice嗓音。如果说一个人的嗓门非常大，可以说a loud voice。嗓音特别轻a quiet voice.这里用a good voice来形容Christine的歌声非常好听。

* angel:天使。the voice of an angel——天使般的嗓音。除此以外，angel还可以表示好人。例如Thank you so much! You are an angel! 意思是太感谢你了，你真是个天使般的好人。

* call for more：意思是想要Christine再唱一首。在现在的演唱会上，当歌迷们call for more的时候他们会喊“安可”。这其实是encore的音译。Encore本身的意思就是加演。

在那天的演出中，14号包厢里坐着Phillippe和Raoul两兄弟。哥哥Phillippe是the Comte de Chagny，翻译成英语就是the Count of Chagny，这里的count意思是伯爵。弟弟Raoul是the Vicomte de Chagny。Vicomte翻译成英语就是viscount，意思是子爵。弄不清楚伯爵子爵是什么，但也就是说兄弟俩都是贵族，出自Chagny家族（the Chagny family）。

哥哥Phillippe问弟弟Raoul‘Well, Raoul, what did you think of Daaé tonight?’

* well：语气词，用于引出话题，类似于中文的“那个”。

* think of sth. /sb. ：认为，觉得。例如：What do you think of my new shoes?你觉得我的新鞋子怎么样。同样，觉得很好、评价很高可以说think highly of sb.，而评价不高则可以说not think much of sb.

例如：Raoul thinks highly of Daaé. 觉得Daaé 非常好

 Raoul doesn‘t think much of Daaé. 觉得Daaé一般般

Raoul对他的哥哥笑着说‘What can I say? She is an angel, that’s all. I’m going to her dressing room to see her tonight.’ Raoul的反应非常强烈，我能说什么呢？她就是天使

* What can I say：我能说什么呢？

* That’s all: 用于句尾，强调没有别的需要解释的了。

Phillipe比Raoul大了20岁，和兄弟比起来他更像是Raoul的父亲。(He is more like a father than a brother.)他一听就知道，Raoul恋爱了（he’s in love.）。于是他笑着问道‘This is your first visit to the opera. How do you know Christine Daaé?’ (你才第一次来到剧院，你怎么这么快就fall in love with Daaé的呀？)

Raoul说：'You remember four years ago, when I was on holiday by the sea, in Brittany? Well, I met Christine there. I was in love with her then, and I am still in love with her today!’

* on holiday:度假。还可以说take a holiday，是去度假的意思。

* by the sea：在海边。by 可以表示在什么边上。例如by the river就是在河边

* Brittany：布列塔尼。法国西部的一个地区，和英格兰隔海相望。

演出结束后，Raoul走进Daaé的化妆间，可是他看到的不是那个在舞台上像angel一样魅力四射的女主角，他看到Daaé脸色苍白，Raoul走到她的椅子旁关切地说'Christine! What's the matter? Are you ill? Don't you remember me— Raoul de Chagny, in Brittany?'

这时候Christine看上去很害怕，her blue eyes were afraid.她说‘No, I don’t know you. Please go away. I’m not well. ‘(我不认识你，请离开，我不舒服。) 这时照料'Christine的医生也说，Daaé需要休息，所有人都必须离开房间。Everybody, please leave the room. Mademoiselle Daaé needs to be quiet. She is very tired.'

* mademoiselle: 法语，未婚的年轻女士。相当于英语里的miss。我们来看看英文里的几个相关词汇：Miss用于表示未婚的女性，而Mrs则用于已婚的女性。在现代社会里，有些人认为婚姻状态是自己的隐私，所以人们又发明了Ms这个说法，无论是否结了婚的女士都可以用这个词，这样就不会把婚姻状况透露出去啦。需要注意的是，无论Miss, Mrs,还是Ms，都要么加全名，要么加姓。例如用英文称呼Christine Daaé我们可以说Miss Christine Daaé,也可以说Miss Daaé，但是一般不会说Miss Christine。

Outside in the passage Raoul was angry and unhappy. （在房间外面的走廊里，Raoul非常生气和伤心。）How could Christine forget me? How could she say that to me?（她怎么会忘了我？她怎么会这么跟我说话？）于是他回到化妆室的门口，突然，他听到里面传来了另一个男人的声音。

'Christine, you must love me!' 那个男人说。

接着，Raoul听到了Daaé的声音，听起来很忧伤和害怕： 'How can you talk like that? When I sing only for you...? Tonight, I gave everything to you, everything. And now I'm so tired.'

Raoul离开了。原来这就是为什么Daaé说不认识自己的原因。可是，为什么她的声音听起来那么忧伤？于是Raoul躲在阴影里，想要看看自己的情敌究竟是谁。

大约10分钟后，Daaé走了出来，可是身后并没有人。（There was no man came out after her）。Raoul 快步走进化妆间里，but there is no one in the dressing room。他关上门，大喊：’Where are you? I know you’re here! Come out!’ 然而，并没有回答。这间屋子里真的没有其他人。

* come out：出来，走出。out 表示外面。例如口语里说Go out！或者Get out！意思就是滚出去。而It’s cold out today. 意思就是今天外面很冷。

* call out：叫出来，喊出来。

情结发生到这儿，年轻的子爵Raoul爱上了Daaé。原来他们四年前就认识彼此了。可是为什么Daaé说自己不认识Raoul呢？房间里的那个男人又是谁？为什么Raoul进了屋子里却又找不到另外一个人？where did he go? 这么多疑问让我们在下期节目里再去一一揭晓吧。See you next time!
