上期回顾 

Hello! 大家好！welcome back to bookworm reading time！上期节目里我们提到了贵族青年Raoul四年前爱上了挪威女歌手Daaé。两人在巴黎重逢后，Raoul兴冲冲的去找她，可是Daaé居然说不认识对方。当所有人离开后，Daaé的dressing room里传来了一个男人的声音。当Raoul走进房间，却空无一人。

而今天的节目里，我们暂时放一放Raoul和Daaé的故事，去看看一位熟悉的人物，the Opera Ghost。还记得他对经理们的威胁吗？I can be a good friend, but a bad enermy。今天的故事里，the phantom is bad enemy!一起来啃书吧。

Daaé的演出大受欢迎，歌剧院的两位经理Armand和Firmin很高兴。Everything in life was good.可是到了第二天，也就是周三的下午，他们可就高兴不起来了。因为the Opera Ghost给他们写了第二封信，一个他们觉得是joke不存在的人给了他们第二封警告信：

Why don't you listen to me? I am getting angry. Leave Box 5 free for me. And where are my 20,000 francs? On Friday Daaé must sing Margarita again. She is now the best singer in Paris. La Carlotta cannot sing—she has a very ugly voice, like a toad.

Remember, I am a bad enemy.

* get angry：生气。如果我们想说对某人生气，可以在angry后面加上with sb.例如the Opera Ghost对经理们生气就是The Opera Ghost got angry with the directors.

* free：除了自由，free还可以表示免费的。例如free ticket的意思就是免费票。

* ugly voice: 很难听的声音。好听的声音good voice, 响亮的声音loud voice, 轻的声音quiet voice. ugly：丑陋的，没有吸引力的。例如The building is very ugly. 意思就是这栋楼真丑。

* toad：癞蛤蟆。在英语文化里，toad经常用来比喻令人讨厌的人。在《哈利波特》里，哈利波特觉得反派Umbridge就像一只癞蛤蟆，他施魔法的时候把好多人变成了not anything else but toad。

Armand is very angry，他大吼道’Is this still a joke? What are we going to do now, eh? Is O.G. the director here, or are we?’

* shout: 喊叫。对某人喊叫我们可以说shout at sb. 例如Armand shouted at Firmin.

* eh：语气词，表示惊讶。我们先看一个惊讶的例子：’It’s raining again!’ ‘Eh?’ 第一个人说又下雨了，第二个人觉得很惊讶，他说’Eh?’意思就是“什么？啊？” 那么请对方反应应该怎么用呢？直接在自己说的话后面加上eh就可以了，例如It’s cold outside, eh?外面天气真冷啊，是吧？文中Armand说What are we going to do now, eh？就是后者，请对方做出反应。意思是，我们现在怎么办？你说啊？

Firmin也不知道该怎么办，不过他觉得应该问问Madame Giry, the doorkeeper of Box 5。同学们还记得Madame Giry吗？她在第一集里出现过，She was a fat, motherly woman, with a red, happy face.（她是一个胖胖的慈祥的妇人，有一张红彤彤的开心的脸）。

Armand和Firmin找来了Madame Giry，问她‘Some people say the Opera ghost has no head, and some people say he has no body. Tell us about him. What do you say, Madame Giry?‘

Madame Giry的回答令人惊讶，她笑着说’I say that the directors of the Opera House are fools.’她非常轻蔑地对两个directors说，我觉得你们就是俩傻瓜。

* fool:我们在第一集里讲过，fool是傻瓜，笨蛋的意思。这里我们补充一个词April Fools’ Day（愚人节）。我们知道，愚人节是每年的四月一号。在那一天，可以开一些善意的玩笑去骗别人。当别人被你骗倒的时候，你要大喊一声April fool！不过我们要注意，在英国，习惯上愚人节的玩笑只能在中午12点之前开。也就是说下午和晚上是不可以开愚人节玩笑的哦。而且现在很多人把愚人节当作开party的节日，所以经常在下午或晚上进行一些游戏来庆祝愚人节，不过这和最初的想法是不一样的。

当两个directors听到Madame Giry说自己是笨蛋的时候，Armand非常生气，he stood up, and his face was red and angry. Firmin则很冷静，他让Armand坐下，并问Madame Giry: ’Why do you say thant?’

Madame Giry说，Because the Opera ghost is angry with you. When the ghost wants something, he must have it. He is clever and dangerous.

她还说，之前的经理们，The old directors before you tried to stop him at first. Then there were many accidents in the Opera House, many strange accidents. So, the old directors learnt very quickly.老的经理们很快就学到了，因为识时务者为俊杰，他们觉得还有一个director ghost掌控着很多东西，必须要和他平衡好，于是他们满足了幽灵的所有要求。

* stop:除了有停止的意思以外，还可以表示阻止。文中的stop him意思就是阻止他。如果我们想说阻止某人做某事，我们可以用stop sb. from doing sth. 例如She wants to stop him from going. 意思就是她不想让他走。

* at first:起初，一开始。它的反义词是at last，最后，最终。

* accident:我们知道，accident的意思是意外，事故。那么by accident是什么意思呢？它是指偶然的。例如I break the glass by accident.

* strange:陌生的；奇怪的。这里many strange accidents意思是很多奇怪的意外。Strange还可以表示不舒服，如果我们说I feel a little strange. 意思则是我有点不舒服。

Armand还是很生气，他觉得Madame Giry疯了, she is mad.他决定不听the Opera Ghost的威胁，除了他会让La Carlotta演唱Margarita这个角色以外，5号包厢他决定今天自己用。

Madame Giry走到经理们身边，轻声说‘Remember Joseph Buquet? I tell you, the Opera Ghost is a good friend, but a bad enemy.’ Madame Giry特意去提醒了一下，你们别忘了Joseph的下场。

Armand和Firmin立刻想到，幽灵在信里也写了同样的话——he is a good friend, but a bad enemy. 他们紧紧地盯着Madame Giry，一字一句的问道’Why did you say those words?’ Madame Giry的回答很简单:‘Because the ghost says the to me. I never see him, but I often hear him. 我告诉你们，我一直能听到他，他一直存在。

* stare:盯着。盯着某人或某物看，我们可以用stare at sb/sth，这里有电害怕的意思。

下期预告 

在今天的故事里，the Opera Ghost发怒了，他又写了封信给经理们，除了要求5号包厢和钱，他还要经理们用Daaé代替La Carlotta出场演唱。经理们决定不听Madame Giry的劝说，无视幽灵的威胁。
