故事背景 

Hello! 同学们大家好！欢迎回到Bookworm Reading Time。在前几期的节目里，我们一起阅读了The Phantom of the Opera 《歌剧院里的幽灵》。从今天开始，我们将进入一个新的故事，这个故事同样发生在法国。它就是法国著名作家Victor Hugo的代表作LES MISÉRABLES，《悲惨世界》。

近几年我们和《悲惨世界》的近距离接触应该就是那部音乐剧了，也许你脑海中还会浮现它的旋律，当时那部片子给大家的感觉是政治性、革命性非常强，但是事实上，如果跟着我一起把原著读一读，会发现其实《悲惨世界》是一部特别温馨的作品，中间充满着亲情、爱情和友情。今天我们将开始chapter1——Jean Valjean，也就是我们的故事的男主角。.

书虫啃书 

我们的故事发生在18世纪末19世纪初的法国。当时法国的贫富差距特别的大，The rich ride in carriages, and eat from gold plates. The poor have no work, no food, no hope.

* carriage：四轮马车。乘坐四轮马车要用ride这个动词，也就是ride in a carriage。在王子和公主的故事里经常有 ride in a carriage的情节。在现代，carriage有另外一个意思，就是火车的车厢，我们说a railway carriage。而the carriage at the end of the train意思就是火车最后面的那个车厢。

* plate：盘子。它还可用作量词，例如一盘面条我们可以说a plate of noodle，一盘蔬菜a plate of vegetable。

Jean Valjean就是一个穷人。He is a young man, big, strong, and a good worker – but he has no job. 他和姐姐住在一起。他的姐夫已经去世了，留下了七个孩子。

It is a cold hard winter. Jean Valjean无法忍受姐姐的孩子们因为饥饿而发出的哭号，于是他决定去帮他们找点吃的。He broke the window of the bakery and took a loaf of bread. a loaf of bread就是一条面包，因为偷这一条面包他很快就被抓住了，被判处5年徒刑。他两次从监狱里逃跑，都被抓了回去。因为这些，他总共被判了19年。Nineteen years in prison – for a loaf of bread!

* hard winter：hard有天气恶劣的意思，所以hard winter意思就是严冬。我们要注意，中文翻译成英文的时候，有时不能一对一逐字翻译，比如说这里的严冬就是hard winter。还有大风不是big wind，而是strong wind。大雨不是big rain，而是heavy rain。

到了1815年，Jean Valjean终于刑满释放了。He is a different man. Years of misery, years of backbreaking work, years of cruel prison guards. These things change a man. Once there was love in Jean Valjean’s heart. Now, there is only hate.

* misery：n. 悲惨。这本书的书名上写了LES, 看起来不是很熟悉，因为这是个法语词，如果把书名改成英文，就是我们熟悉的miserable，它是个形容词，misery就是miserable的名词。

* prison guard：guard意思是守卫，卫兵。所以prison guard就是守卫监狱的人，也就是俗称的狱警。

1815年十月的一个晚上，Jean Valjean来到了迪涅主教的家里。The bishop was a kind man; Poor people, hungry people, miserable people – they all came to the door of the bishop’s house.

* bishop：主教。这个词还可以指国际象棋（chess）里的象。这里我们顺便介绍一下国际象棋里的六种棋子的名称，很多都是我们学过的：国王—king，皇后—queen，车—rook，马—knight（骑士），兵—pawn。

* Digne：法国南部的一个城市。

主教的妹妹看到Jean Valjean的第一反应非常害怕。She whispered to the bishop: ‘He carries a yellow card, so he was once a prisoner – a bad man.’

* yellow card：黄色的卡，引申为黄色身份证。在当时表明持有者有犯罪前科。

但是主教没有在意这些，他不仅热情的邀请Jean Valjean进来，还说 ‘You must eat dinner with us, and sleep in a warm bed tonight.’ Jean Valjean对主教说: ‘I was a prisoner in Toulon for nineteen years. People everywhere shut their doors in my face – but not you. Why not?’ ‘Because in the eyes of God you are my brother.’主教微笑着答道。

* Toulon：土伦。法国南部的港口城市。

主教让她的妹妹取出silver plates和silver candlesticks，摆上丰盛的晚餐招待Jean Valjean。可是到了夜里，Jean Valjean偷走了盘子，他心里想 ‘For just one of them, I can eat well for months!’ 曾经的Jean Valjean是个心地善良的好人，他为了姐姐家的孩子，才迫不得已去偷面包。可是，Nineteen years in prison is a long time, and nineteen hard years change a man.

* candlestick：烛台。candle是蜡烛的意思，stick是棍子的意思。

第二天早上，拿着银盘的Jean Valjean实在太显眼了。看到他的人都悄悄的说 ‘Those plates came from church. He carries a yellow card. He’s a thief – he stole those plates.’

* steal：偷。例如小偷偷走了小男孩的自行车我们可以说The thief stole a small boy’s bicycle.这里我们需要注意，steal是不规则动词，过去式和过去分词分别是stole和stolen。

警察们听说了以后，把Jean Valjean带回了主教的家里。可是主教却对着Jean Valjean说’My dear friend! You forgot the candlesticks! I gave you the silver plates and the candlesticks, you remember? But you forgot to take the candlesticks when you left.’

警察说’But this man is a thief!’

‘No, of course not. I gave the silver to Monsieur Valjean.’主教答道。

* monsieur：法语，先生相当于英文中的Mr. 。

于是警察们释放了Jean Valjean。主教则回到房子里，拿出了两个silver candlesticks，交给Jean Valjean。’My brother. You must leave your bad life behind you. This is God’s silver, and I’m giving it to you. With it, you can begin a new, good life. I am buying your soul for God.’

Jean Valjean带着银器离开了。’How can I hate people when this bishop is so good to me?’ 他坐在路边哭了。He cried for the first time in nineteen years. 没有人知道他哭了多久，也没有人知道他后来去了哪里。但是，when the sun came up on a new day, he was a changed man.
