场景假设：刚刚过完新年，你在坐火车时遇到一个老外，你们一起聊关于新年的话题。你想到一个同学Kevin给你讲述的他在新年前夜，遇到的一个新年大钟的有趣故事。于是你和这位老外分享这个故事。

谈到新年，我想和你分享一个有趣的故事：

Talking about the new year, I would like to share with you an interesting story.

在新年的前夜，我的同学Kevin和朋友一起去了市政大厅。

On New Year’s Eve, my classmate Kevin went to the Town Hall with his friends.

当他们到达时，已经有一大群人聚集在大钟下准备迎接新年。

When they arrived，there were already a large crowd of people gathering under the Town Hall clock to greet the new year.

再过二十分钟，人们期待大钟即将敲响12下，大家都热切期盼这个激动人心的时刻。

In twenty minutes’ time, the big clock was supposed to strike twelve, and everybody was looking forward to the exciting moment.

然而，就在12点差五分的时候，一个意想不到的事发生了：大钟停止了工作。

However, just at five to twelve, something unexpected happened: the clock stopped working.

大家安静地等待了一段时间，但是大钟并没有恢复正常。

People waited for some time, but the clock didn’t return to normal.

突然，有一个人大声喊道：“已经12点2分了，钟已经停了”。

Suddenly someone shouted out，'It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!'  

那时，我的朋友Kevin才看了看表，发现的确如此。

At that moment, my friend Kevin checked his watch and found that it was true.

钟为什么停了？

Why did the clock stop?

大钟不情愿迎接新年，而在一年的最后关头罢工了。

Kevin said the clock was unwilling to welcome the new year so it refused to work at the last moment of the year.

当大家都意识到发生了什么事，他们有什么反应呢？

When everybody realized what had happened, how did they react?  

人们并没有抱怨大钟，而是开心的笑了，并且唱歌迎接新年。

Instead of complaining about the clock, people began to laugh and sing and celebrated the new year.

思维文化点评 

这个小故事，也是新概念2写得特别精彩的小故事。它也包含了第一课讲过的好故事的5个要素。

前几句交代了setting：交代了故事的时间the last day of the year,和背景很多人聚在大钟下等待；

后面出现了矛盾conflict：再5分钟就新年了，钟竟然停了；

然后是故事的development：大家等啊等，什么都没发生；

接着是故事的climax高潮：有人大喊，已经12点过了，钟坏了；

最后是故事的resolution结尾：作者幽默地评价，大钟拒绝迎接新年，而人们也开心地庆祝新年。

除了包含了好故事的五大要素外，这个故事也告诉大家面对倒霉事时，看待事物的一种角度。

英文中有句谚语：

Every coin has its two sides.

每一枚硬币都有两面。

If you always look at the bright side, you will never be down. 当你看到事情光明的一面，你永远不会有低潮。

英语中有这样一句话：Sometimes, we cannot choose what happens to us, but we can choose how to react to it.有时我们不能选择发生在我们身上的事情，但是我们可以选择如何做出反应。

所以如果从一个不同的视角来看同样一件事，你可能会得出不同的结论，而且世界可能会变得不同。So if you look at the same thing from a different perspective, you will come to a different conclusion, and the world will look much different.

有一次，我和一个美国朋友一起吃火锅，估计是食物没熟就吃了，闹肚子，到了医院上吐下泻。第二天，我看到他，问他：How are you doing now ?  

他笑着说：I am ok. It was a pity that I donated the wonderful food to the hospital.好可惜，我把这么好的美食都捐献给了医院。

他没有用vomit呕吐，而用了一个donate，特别幽默地把本来很难过的事给描述出来了。
