[00:00:00.00]The Jungle Book
[00:00:03.30]Chapter Nine
[00:00:05.10]The Great Jungle Battle
[00:00:10.40]Bagheera and Kaa finally reached the edge of Monkey City.
[00:00:16.80]They could see Mowgli in a circle with monkeys surrounding him.
[00:00:21.60]The two friends slipped into a ditch.
[00:00:25.90]"I wish Baloo was here," Bagheera whispered.
[00:00:29.90]"But we will do what we can."
[00:00:32.70]He looked up at the sky.
[00:00:35.10]"When that cloud covers the moon, I'll go to the terrace."
[00:00:39.60]"Good luck," Kaa whispered.
[00:00:42.40]"I will go over the west wall."
[00:00:46.10]Then he glided away.
[00:00:49.20]The monkeys were still giving boastful speeches.
[00:00:52.70]Mowgli saw it was getting dark.
[00:00:56.80]Suddenly he heard something — Bagheera's light feet on the marble terrace.
[00:01:03.40]"It worked!" he thought with relief.
[00:01:06.80]"My plan worked!"
[00:01:10.00]With a furious roar, the panther rushed forward.
[00:01:14.90]He darted right and left, striking monkeys.
[00:01:18.70]The startled creatures howled with fright and rage.
[00:01:23.80]Finally a monkey managed to kick Bagheera.
[00:01:27.50]"There's only one attacker!"
[00:01:29.70]she shouted. "Let's get him!"
[00:01:33.20]A mass of monkeys surrounded Bagheera.
[00:01:36.20]They were biting, scratching, tearing, and pulling.
[00:01:41.50]Meanwhile another group had grabbed Mowgli.
[00:01:45.40]They dragged him up the wall of a temple.
[00:01:49.00]Then they pushed him through a hole in its broken dome.
[00:01:54.50]A boy raised by humans would have gotten hurt in the fall to the temple floor.
[00:01:59.90]But Mowgli fell exactly as Baloo had taught him.
[00:02:04.00]He landed on his feet.
[00:02:07.10]"Stay in there," a monkey said.
[00:02:10.40]"We'll be back after we get rid of your friends!"
[00:02:13.50]Now Mowgli could hear Kaa.
[00:02:18.00]He quickly gave the snake's call.
[00:02:21.00]There were other snakes inside the ruins.
[00:02:23.70]They hissed back at him.
[00:02:27.00]"Stand still, Little Brother.
[00:02:30.50]Please don't step on us!"
[00:02:34.50]Mowgli stood as quietly as he could,
[00:02:38.80]peering through a hole.
[00:02:40.50]He listened to the furious sound of Bagheera fighting.
[00:02:45.10]"Baloo must be here too," Mowgli thought.
[00:02:48.50]Bagheera would not have come without him.
[00:02:51.60]"But right now Bagheera could use some help from me."
[00:02:55.70]"Go to the water tank, Bagheera," he shouted.
[00:02:59.50]"Get to the water!" Bagheera heard Mowgli's cry.
[00:03:04.30]"Thank goodness!" the panther thought, fighting his way toward the tanks.
[00:03:09.90]"The man cub is safe!"
[00:03:12.70]Suddenly a shout rose. It was Baloo.
[00:03:17.30]"Bagheera! I'm here!"
[00:03:21.00]The old bear panted as he climbed the terrace.
[00:03:30.00]He threw himself onto his rear legs and held out his paws.
[00:03:34.90]Then he began to hit away monkeys. Bat-bat-bat!
[00:03:40.40]Mowgli heard a crash, followed by a splash.
[00:03:44.60]Bagheera had made it to the water tank!
[00:03:47.70]The monkeys would not follow him in there.
[00:03:50.50]The panther gasped for breath, his head just out of the water.
[00:03:55.70]Monkeys stood on the steps, dancing up and down with rage.
[00:04:00.40]They were ready to spring on him when he came out to help Baloo.
[00:04:06.30]"Where's Kaa?" Bagheera thought.
[00:04:09.00]Had the snake left?
[00:04:11.70]He lifted his dripping chin and gave the snake's call.
[00:04:17.30]It had taken Kaa a long time to get over the west wall.
[00:04:22.80]He coiled and uncoiled himself,
[00:04:25.50]to be sure that every bit of his long body was working.
[00:04:31.30]Meanwhile, Baloo fought some monkeys.
[00:04:35.00]Mang the bat flew back and forth over them all,
[00:04:39.20]carrying the news of the battle.
[00:04:41.40]Then Hathi the elephant trumpeted loudly,
[00:04:46.10]waking up birds and more monkeys.
[00:04:48.90]Jungle animals began racing toward Monkey City.
[00:04:53.50]All at once Kaa came — ready to deliver a crushing blow.
[00:04:59.70]The python's first strike drove into the heart of the crowd around Baloo.
[00:05:04.80]He didn't need to strike again.
[00:05:08.20]For all at once the monkeys scattered.
[00:05:13.30]"It's Kaa!" they cried.
[00:05:16.60]"Run!"
