[00:00:00.00]The Jungle Book
[00:00:03.80]Chapter Eight
[00:00:05.10]Monkey City
[00:00:13.10]Baloo grinned proudly as Rann flew off.
[00:00:16.70]"Mowgli remembered the hawk's language!
[00:00:19.50]And he found a way to send us a message."
[00:00:23.50]"See?" Bagheera said.
[00:00:26.00]"I told you that he's very smart.
[00:00:28.70]But we'd better get to Monkey City right away."
[00:00:31.80]Everyone knew where Monkey City was,
[00:00:35.00]but few jungle animals went there.
[00:00:39.20]It was an old deserted city, buried in the jungle.
[00:00:43.70]Only the monkeys liked to use places once used by people.
[00:00:48.60]"It is half a night's journey—at full speed,"
[00:00:53.50]Bagheera said, glancing at the old bear.
[00:00:56.40]"I'll go as fast as I can," Baloo promised.
[00:01:01.10]"We can't wait for you," Bagheera said.
[00:01:04.00]"Kaa and I will rush ahead.
[00:01:05.90]You can follow as best you can."
[00:01:08.50]"I have no feet," Kaa said.
[00:01:12.10]"But I'm very fast.
[00:01:14.60]Let's go."
[00:01:17.50]Baloo hurried after Kaa and Bagheera,
[00:01:21.10]but soon he stopped, panting.
[00:01:24.00]Bagheera kept running, while Kaa seemed to pour himself along the ground.
[00:01:31.40]The snake found the quickest route through the jungle with his steady eyes
[00:01:37.00]and followed it.
[00:01:42.40]Mowgli looked around Monkey City.
[00:01:45.80]It was in ruins now.
[00:01:48.20]But some king had built it long ago.
[00:01:51.30]Trees grew in and out of marble walls,
[00:01:55.00]and wild vines hung from windows.
[00:01:58.40]There was a palace with no roof at the top of the hill.
[00:02:01.90]Below the palace were rows of houses and empty pits.
[00:02:06.40]Shattered domes from temples lay on the ground.
[00:02:10.10]The monkeys called this place Monkey City.
[00:02:15.30]Yet they had no idea how to use the people's buildings.
[00:02:19.60]They sat inside the marble rooms and scratched for fleas.
[00:02:24.60]They raced along the terrace, shaking orange trees, just to watch the fruit fall.
[00:02:30.60]They drank and fought at the water tanks.
[00:02:34.20]Every once in a while, the monkeys got tired of the city.
[00:02:38.70]Then they went back to the treetops.
[00:02:42.60]The monkeys reached the city late in the day.
[00:02:46.90]Instead of going to sleep after the long journey,
[00:02:50.30]the monkeys joined hands and danced.
[00:02:53.80]One monkey even made a long speech.
[00:02:57.90]"This man cub is going to change monkey history!"
[00:03:03.40]he announced. "This boy will show us how to weave sticks together.
[00:03:08.40]We can create shelters."
[00:03:11.40]With a sigh, Mowgli began to weave some sticks together.
[00:03:17.20]A few monkeys tried to do just what he was doing.
[00:03:21.30]But one by one, they got bored and jumped up.
[00:03:26.60]Some started pulling friends' tails.
[00:03:29.70]Others jumped around, singing.
[00:03:32.60]Finally Mowgli gave up and put down the sticks.
[00:03:36.60]"I'm hungry!"
[00:03:38.60]Twenty monkeys jumped up to bring him nuts.
[00:03:42.50]They started fighting on the way—and forgot all about the food.
[00:03:47.30]"Baloo was right," Mowgli thought.
[00:03:50.90]"Monkeys have no laws and no leader.
[00:03:54.40]All they do is steal and sing. I'm going home!"
[00:03:59.20]Mowgli jumped to his feet and headed toward the gate.
[00:04:04.00]But the monkeys quickly pulled him back.
[00:04:07.90]"Oh no! You're staying with us!"
[00:04:11.10]"Why do you want to leave?" a monkey said.
[00:04:14.50]"We're the most wonderful creatures in the jungle. We'll tell you all about how great we are!"
[00:04:20.30]All the monkeys were gathering on the terrace to listen to the silly stories.
[00:04:27.10]Mowgli couldn't help laughing.
[00:04:32.40]"I wonder if they ever sleep," he thought.
[00:04:36.00]He looked up to see a cloud sliding toward the moon.
[00:04:40.40]Soon it would be completely dark.
[00:04:44.50]He'd try again to escape then.
