[00:00:00.00]The Jungle Book
[00:00:03.40]Chapter Two
[00:00:05.00]Council Rock
[00:00:13.50]Mother Wolf gazed at the small human in wonder.
[00:00:18.50]"He's so little!" she said softly.
[00:00:23.00]The young boy was squirming between two cubs to get warm.
[00:00:27.90]"Look at that! He's not afraid of us or the cubs."
[00:00:32.70]"I've heard of young humans living with wolves," Father Wolf said.
[00:00:37.50]"But I've never seen it in my own pack."
[00:00:41.40]Just then the wolves heard something and spun toward the entrance of the cave.
[00:00:47.80]Tabaqui had returned with the tiger, Shere Khan.
[00:00:52.60]"The boy is here, master!" the jackal said eagerly.
[00:00:57.60]"I see him."
[00:01:01.80]"Shere Khan, your visit brings us great honor,"
[00:01:06.40]Father Wolf said politely.
[00:01:09.20]But his eyes sparked with anger.
[00:01:12.50]"What do you need?"
[00:01:14.70]"A human cub went this way," Shere Khan said.
[00:01:19.90]"His parents have run off.
[00:01:22.40]Give the man cub to me."
[00:01:26.30]Luckily, the cave entrance was too narrow for Shere Khan to enter.
[00:01:31.70]"We wolves are free creatures," said Father Wolf.
[00:01:36.70]"We take orders from the head of the pack, not from you."
[00:01:41.70]The tiger's furious roar filled the cave.
[00:01:48.10]Mother Wolf sprang forward.
[00:01:51.50]In the darkness her eyes looked like two green moons as she faced Shere Khan.
[00:01:58.00]"The human cub is mine!" She growled.
[00:02:01.60]"He will not be killed.
[00:02:03.90]He will live to run with the pack and to hunt with the pack.
[00:02:07.60]Now go, Shere Khan!"
[00:02:09.50]Father looked on in amazement.
[00:02:13.80]He had forgotten how fierce his mate could be when she was angry.
[00:02:19.00]Shere Khan backed away from the cave.
[00:02:22.20]"We'll see what the pack says about that human cub!"
[00:02:26.60]He snarled. "He's mine,
[00:02:30.30]and his life will end in my teeth!"
[00:02:39.30]Mother threw herself down among the cubs
[00:02:43.00]as Father watched the tiger stalk off.
[00:02:46.30]"Shere Khan spoke the truth about one thing,"
[00:02:51.00]Father said with a sigh.
[00:02:55.70]"We must show this cub to the pack.
[00:02:59.20]Do you really plan to keep him?"
[00:03:01.90]"Of course I'll keep him!" Mother snapped.
[00:03:05.90]"The poor little creature came at night, alone and hungry.
[00:03:10.70]I'll call him Mowgli," she added.
[00:03:13.80]"One day he will hunt Shere Khan, just as that tiger has hunted him."
[00:03:19.70]Father was worried.
[00:03:22.00]"What will our pack say?"
[00:03:24.30]The law of the jungle was very clear.
[00:03:27.80]The pack protected young cubs until they were old enough to hunt on their own.
[00:03:35.40]But the pack wasn't likely to protect a human cub.
[00:03:41.20]"We'll deal with that later," Mother replied firmly.
[00:03:46.20]The pack council met once every month, when the moon was full.
[00:03:50.70]It was the duty of all new parents to show their cubs to the council.
[00:03:55.50]On the night of the next pack meeting,
[00:03:59.80]Father and Mother went to Council Rock.
[00:04:03.30]The wolf cubs and Mowgli ran after them.
[00:04:09.20]Council Rock was a hilltop covered with stones and boulders.
[00:04:14.40]Akela, the great gray wolf,
[00:04:17.80]lay across a rock.
[00:04:19.90]He had led the pack for a year now.
[00:04:22.60]He was a wise, strong leader, who knew the ways and customs of people.
[00:04:28.50]It was very quiet at Council Rock.
[00:04:32.00]All the parents sat in a circle.
[00:04:34.80]In the center of the circle, the cubs tumbled over one another, playing.
[00:04:40.60]One by one, the wolf parents showed their cubs to show the pack.
[00:04:46.10]"Look well, oh, wolves!"
[00:04:49.10]Akela cried.
[00:04:51.50]The mothers anxiously repeated the call.
[00:04:54.70]"Look, look well, oh, wolves!"
[00:04:58.30]Mother's fur quivered.
[00:05:02.80]It was almost time to show Mowgli to the pack.
[00:05:06.60]What would the wolves say when they saw the odd-looking man cub?
