[00:00:00.00]The Jungle Book
[00:00:03.50]Chapter Three
[00:00:05.10]Mowgli
[00:00:16.70]The small man cub sat in the circle with the wolf cubs.
[00:00:21.50]He was playing with some white pebbles that glowed in the moonlight.
[00:00:26.20]Father Wolf nudged Mowgli forward with his nose.
[00:00:30.40]"Look well, oh, wolves!"
[00:00:36.40]Akela cried, as he'd done with the other cubs.
[00:00:40.40]Before any wolves could respond,
[00:00:43.50]a muffled roar came from behind the rocks.
[00:00:47.00]It was Shere Khan.
[00:00:52.30]"The cub is mine!"
[00:00:55.80]the tiger growled.
[00:00:57.80]"Give him to me!"
[00:01:01.20]"Look well, oh, wolves!" Akela called.
[00:01:06.40]"Look well upon this cub!"
[00:01:09.60]The law of the jungle was that two wolves had to speak for the cub.
[00:01:15.80]This was how the pack accepted the wolf cubs.
[00:01:21.30]"Who will speak for this cub?" Akela called.
[00:01:26.20]Mother Wolf tensed, ready to defend Mowgli.
[00:01:30.90]Akela was still waiting for someone to speak.
[00:01:34.10]Besides the wolves in the pack,
[00:01:36.90]only one other animal was allowed at the pack council.
[00:01:42.40]It was Baloo, a sleepy brown bear
[00:01:46.00]who taught the wolf cubs the law of the jungle.
[00:01:49.60]Baloo ate only nuts, roots, and honey,
[00:01:53.50]so none of the other jungle creatures feared him.
[00:01:57.20]As Shere Khan stepped closer, the brown bear rose on his back legs.
[00:02:02.50]He grunted loudly. "I speak for the human cub.
[00:02:07.20]Let him run with the pack.
[00:02:09.50]I will teach him, as I teach the other cubs."
[00:02:14.00]"Who else will speak for the human cub?" Akela called.
[00:02:19.40]Just then a black shadow dropped down into the circle.
[00:02:24.50]It was Bagheera, the black panther.
[00:02:28.30]The wolves quickly backed away from him.
[00:02:31.20]"Akela, I have no right to be here.
[00:02:35.70]" The black panther's voice was as soft as honey dripping from a tree.
[00:02:40.30]"But the law of the jungle says a cub's life may be bought.
[00:02:45.70]Am I right?" "Yes!"
[00:02:48.80]a few young wolves replied eagerly.
[00:02:51.80]The young wolves were always hungry.
[00:02:54.90]"Akela!" one wolf called.
[00:02:57.80]"Listen to Bagheera.
[00:03:00.00]The cub can be bought for a price.
[00:03:02.80]It is the law of the jungle."
[00:03:05.20]The black panther smiled gently.
[00:03:09.20]"I'd like to propose a deal.
[00:03:11.90]Baloo has already spoken for the boy.
[00:03:15.10]If the rest of you accept him, I will share some delicious food with you.
[00:03:20.70]It's a fat bull, freshly killed."
[00:03:25.60]Mother Wolf looked at Father.
[00:03:28.20]"Why is the panther speaking up for Mowgli?" she said.
[00:03:31.50]Father shrugged.
[00:03:33.20]The other wolves had gathered to discuss the situation.
[00:03:37.50]"The boy will die in the winter rains," one said.
[00:03:42.60]"He will burn in the sun," another added.
[00:03:45.80]"What harm can a little cub do?"
[00:03:49.90]"Come on. Let's let him run with the pack."
[00:03:53.50]Finally the wolves agreed to accept Mowgli.
[00:03:57.80]Mowgli sat calmly, playing with the white pebbles.
[00:04:01.90]Akela's cry rose as they each inspected him.
[00:04:05.90]"Look well, look well, wolves!"
[00:04:09.70]Soon the pack started down the hill to eat the meal promised by the panther.
[00:04:15.60]Akela, Bagheera, Baloo, and Mowgli's family stayed behind at the rock.
[00:04:22.20]With a furious roar, Shere Khan stalked away from them.
[00:04:28.00]"Roar all you want, tiger," Bagheera muttered.
[00:04:31.90]"I have a feeling about this man cub.
[00:04:35.20]One day Mowgli will make you roar for another reason, Shere Khan."
[00:04:41.30]Akela turned to Mother and Father Wolf with a smile.
[00:04:46.40]"Humans are very wise.
[00:04:49.40]Perhaps your man cub can help our pack in some way."
[00:04:53.60]Mowgli's parents nodded their thanks.
[00:04:57.00]Then Father Wolf turned to the bear.
[00:05:01.20]"And thank you for your help today, Baloo.
[00:05:04.50]Please begin training little Mowgli as soon as possible.
[00:05:08.80]He must learn how to be a wolf."
