读论语 学英语 八佾篇 8 甚么是“礼后乎？”

着重从历代注解中理解论语的内涵

子夏问曰：“‘巧笑倩兮，美目盼兮，素以为绚兮。’何谓也？”

子曰：“绘事后素。”

曰：“礼后乎？”

子曰：“起予者商也！始可与言诗已矣。”

注解：

1：巧笑倩兮，美目盼兮，素以为绚兮—论语集注:「盼，目黑白分也。素，粉地，画之质也。绚，采色，画之饰也。言人有此倩盼之美质，而又加以华采之饰，如有素地而加采色也。」

2：绘事后素—论语集注:「绘事，绘画之事也。后素，后于素也。考工记曰：『绘画之事后素功。』谓先以粉地为质，而后施五采，犹人有美质，然后可加文饰。」

3：礼后乎—论语集注:「礼必以忠信为质，犹绘事必以粉素为先。」

4：起予者商也—商是子夏，姓卜，名商，字子夏。论语集注:「起，犹发也。起予，言能起发我之志意。」

(子夏问曰：“‘巧笑倩兮，美目盼兮，素以为绚兮。’何谓也？”)

Tsze-hsiâ 子夏 asked, saying, "What is the meaning of the passage (文章,乐曲等的)一段 --- 'The pretty dimples 酒窝 of her artful 巧妙的 smile! The well-defined 分明的 black and white of her eye! The plain 朴素的 ground (绘画等的)底子,底材;底色 for the colors?'"

(子曰：“绘事后素。”) 

The Master said, "The business of laying on (涂)上 the colors follows (the preparation of) the plain ground."

(曰：“礼后乎？”子曰：“起予者商也！始可与言诗已矣。”)

"Ceremonies 礼 then are a subsequent 随后的 thing?" The Master said,"It is Shang 商 who can bring out 阐明 my meaning. Now I can begin to talk about the odes 诗 with him."
