Text 1
M: When I was a kid, I was not allowed to watch TV.
W: My parents thought that if I had no idea what the other kids were watching, I wouldn’t be able to make friends the same way or have the same shared experience,so I could watch TV.
Text 2
W: Why two astronauts, but not three, were chosen?
M: The spacecraft can either carry two people for 30 days in the space, or three people for 20 days.
Text 3
M: There are five girls who have a lot in common.
W: How?
M:They all work at McDonald’s; they’re all 18 years old; they share the same car.
Text 4
M: More and more people are working around the clock because of things like smart phones and laptops at home.
W: That is definitely true. The idea of working just 9 to 5 doesn’t really exist.
Text 5
M: Maura, how has your day been?
W: Oh, good. Earlier today I actually went to a nice park. I love meeting up with some friends and having a picnic. Everyone brings a little bit of food. It’s such a nice way to spend a summer afternoon.
Text 6
M: Alisa, one of my friends climbed a mountain, the other one is in Australia, and here I am with just a lot of homework.
W: You know what would make you feel better, Brett?
M: What’s that?
W: Getting off line. Live your life. Focus on your goals and your dreams.
M: But every time I want to do something, another thing shows up.
W: Sounds like you have a bad case of envy. Why don’t you do something meaningful?
M: I guess I could focus on my stamp collection.
W: I guess you could do that.
M: All right, you know what? I’m logging off Facebook. Thanks, Alisa.
Text 7
W: OK, Stephen. I’m a little nervous. Wish me luck.
M: Good luck, Diana. I’m sure you’ll be fantastic in the interview. I’ll see you back here in a couple of hours.
W: Hang on! You have to take Poppy.
M: No, I can’t. I’m going to the gym. They won’t let her in.
W: Oh Stephen, I wish you’d told me before we left the house. What am I going to do with her now?
M: Well, leave her here. She’ll be OK.
W: No way, Stephen! I can’t leave my baby here. You’ll have to take her.
M: No, sorry, Diana. I’ve got to run, sorry!
W: I’ll just have to take you with me then, I guess. Come on, Poppy.
Text 8
M: I’d like to open a bank account.
W: What type of account? We have several types.
M: I’d like an account for regular banking.
W: Will you be writing many cheques?
M: A few but not many.
W: Less than ten per month?
M: Yes. Definitely less than ten. Two or three.
W: How do you pay your bills? Through the mail or online?
M: Normally I bring them to the bank and pay at the tellerbut I would like to start paying them online.
W: Many customers are paying bills online. In fact we recommend it. Less paper.
M: I see. Can I set this up with my new account?
W: Yes. I’ll just need some identification so I can start processing your new banking application.
M: Sure. Can I use my passport?
W: Absolutely. Any government issue ID is acceptable.
Text 9
M: Rose, let’s discuss the preparation for the sale.
W: Sure, Tommy. We will have to do some publicity: flyers and posters.
M: Jamie can be in charge of that. He’s good at designing stuff. What’s the first thing we should do?
W: We should decide the date and where in the school we hold the sale. Then you and I must go and see Mr. Li to get his permission to go ahead.
M: We must have the plans in detail before we see him.
W: Sure. No problem.
M: What sort of stuff did your cousin sell, Rose?
W: CDs, DVDs, books... Let’s make a list of what we would like people to donate and put it on the posters.
M: I’m worried about selling second-hand electrical items like iPods and so on. We can’t be sure they’ll work — or even be safe.
W: You’re right. We must say no to electrical goods... oh, and food items.
Text 10 (约190词)
M: The well-known singer Frank Sinatraarrived in Australia on July 9, 1974 at the age of 58 to give several concerts: two in Melbourne and three in Sydney. Sinatra had come out of retirement to perform these concerts, so reporters were eager to talk to him when he arrived at the airport, but he refused to give any interviews. Without anything to write about, the reporters wrote of his connections with crime organizations and ran photos of his many female companions.
Sinatra saw the articles and wasn’t happy. Following his first song at the Melbourne concert that evening, Sinatra complained and called the press parasites — living things that feed off other living things. The next morning, the Australian Journalists Union demanded an apology. Sinatra refused.
Sinatra’s second concert in Melbourne was cancelled. They refused to refuel Sinatra’s private jet. So he flew on a commercial airline to Sydney for his other three concerts. When he got there, he found out the concerts had been cancelled. And he was trapped. Finally, Sinatra’s lawyer helped him out.
Luckily Sinatra’s hatred didn’t last long. He returned to Australia to perform in 1988, 1989, and 1991.
