Day 12

'Watson, you must take Miss Morstan home. It's very late.' 

'Of course,' I agreed. 'And then?'

Holmes took a piece of paper from his pocket and wrote an address on it.

'And then go to this house and ask for the dog Toby. Bring him here to me as quickly as possible. While you're away I'll talk to Mrs Bernstone and the Indian servant. They may have useful information for us.'

Although my friend's plan was not clear to me at that time, I did not ask him to explain. I left him in the passage and went to find Miss Morstan.

We travelled by cab to Camberwell in south London, where we said goodnight. I felt very sad. There was so much that I wanted to say to her, but I knew that I mustn't. She might soon be a rich woman, and I didn't want her to think that my interest was in her money.

On the journey from Camberwell I thought about everything that had happened. The mystery of Pondicherry Lodge and its treasure seemed a very dark one.

The address Holmes had given me was in a row of dirty houses in the poorest part of Lambeth, just south of the River Thames. I asked the driver to stop, and got out of the cab. I had to knock several times before the door opened. Suddenly I saw an angry face, which was lit by a candle, looking out.

'Go away!' said the man. 'It's the middle of the night. If you don't go away, my dogs will attack you.'

'But I want one of your dogs,' I tried to explain. 'Mr Sherlock Holmes has sent me.'

Immediately the man's face changed.

'Oh. Any friend of Mr Sherlock's is welcome. Come in!'

I found myself in a tiny room with lots of dogs of all kinds. The man lit a lamp and introduced himself.

'Benedict Sherman,' he said, and held out his hand. 

'John Watson,' I replied, shaking it. 'I've come for Toby.'

I could see now that the room contained not only dogs but chickens. Five or six birds were sitting on the table.

Sherman introduced me to Toby, a large, ugly animal, and I took the dog out to my cab. I thanked Mr Sherman and waved goodbye to him as we drove away.

It was three o'clock in the morning when I returned to Pondicherry Lodge. I found Holmes at the front door.

'Good morning, Watson,' he said. 'I see you've found Toby. Lestrade has gone. He arrested not only Mr Thaddeus Sholto but also all the servants in the house. We're alone here, Watson, except for Sergeant Judd, who's upstairs. Come in.'

We left the dog in the garden and climbed the stairs to Bartholomew Sholto's room. Judd was asleep in an armchair.

'We mustn't wake the sergeant up, Watson,' said Holmes with a smile. 'Follow me.'

We climbed the ladder to the space in the roof, where my friend held his lamp above some footprints on the floor.

'What do you notice?' he asked.

'The footprints are very small,' I answered. 'They were probably made by a child or a small woman. But there's a big space between each toe.'

'Very good,' said Holmes.
