Now Portia and Nerissa entered the house .After changing back into their own clothes, they waited for their husbands to arrive from Venice.Indeed, they soon followed the women with Antonio.
Immediately,Bassanio presented his dear friend to the Lady Portia. The congratulations and welcoming of that lady were hardly over when they noticed Nerissa and her husband arguing in a corner of the room.
“Arguing already?"asked Portia.“What is the matter?"
“Lady,it is about a worthless little ring that Nerissa gave me,with words like the poetry engraved on it."said Gratiano,"Love me,and leave me not,it says."“Who cares about the poetry engraved on the ring or the ring's
value?"said Nerissa.“What matters is that you swore to me,when I gave it to you, that you would keep it until the hour of your death. And now you tell me you gave it to thelawyer's clerk! You are a liar! I know you gave it to a woman."
“I swear by my life that I gave it to a young boy.”replied Gratiano.“He was no taller than you.He was a young counselor's clerk, the same counselor by whose wise pleading Mr.Antonio’s life was saved. This small, chatty boy begged it as a fee,and I had no choice but to give it to him."
“Still,it is your fault.”Portia interrupted. “You are to blame,*Gratiano, for having parted with your wife's first gift.I gave my Lord Bassanio a ring, and I am sure he would never part with it,not even for the entire world."
“My Lord Bassanio gave his ring away yo the counselor."Gratiano said.
