The Duke now released Antonio and dismissed the court.He then complimented the wisdom and ingenuity of the young counselor and invited him home to dinner.
But Portia had planned to return to Belmont before her husband.So she replied,"I humbly thank Your Grace, but I must leave right away."
“It is a shame that you cannot stay and dine with me.＂the Duke said.Then，turning to Antonio，he added，“Reward this gentleman.You owe him your life.＂
With that,the Duke and his senators left the court.
“Good sir.”Bassanio said to Portia，Myfriend Antonio and I have been acquitted of grievous penalties thanks to your wisdom.I hope that you will accept the three thousand ducats that were owed to the Jew."
“Give me your gloves instead.”Portiareplied.When Bassanio took off his gloves.she saw the ring which she had given him on his finger.Now the clever lady wanted to take the ring from him so that she could tease him later on.So she said，＂I would like nothing more than that ring for having saved your friend's life.”
Bassanio was greatly distressed because the counselor should ask him for the only thing he could not part with.Thus he replied that he could not give him that ring,because it was his wife's gift and he had vowed never to part with it.Then he promised to give him the most valuable ring in Venice instead,and that he would go and find it at
once.
