Portia now pretended to have been greatly offended. She turned around abruptly and left the court, saying,"I have just saved your friend's life, and you treat me like a beggar.”
“Dear Bassanio, please let the young gentleman have the ring "said Antonio."Isn't my love and the great service that man has done for me not greater than yourwife's displeasure?”
Bassanio, ashamed to appear so ungrateful , yielded. He sent Gratiano after Portia with the ring. Then the "clerk"Nerissa, who had also given Gratiano a ring, begged to have his ring.Gratiano, not choosing to be outdone in generosity by his lord, took it off his finger and gave it to her.
Walking away, these two ladies laughed and giggled. They discussed how they would make their husbands pay for having given away their rings, and how they would accuse them of having given them away as gifts to other women.
Portia, when she returned, was in a happy mood because she had just saved the life of her husband's dear friend. Her cheerful spirits enjoyed everything she saw.The moon seemed to shine more brightly than ever before.
“Oh,what a beautiful night it is!"she said to Nerissa.“It seems our candles are lighting up the moon tonight. How brightly they shine! So shines a good deed in a naughty world.Hearing the sound of music from her house, she said,“I think that music sounds much sweeter now than by day.”
