Juliet went to the friendly friar for advice. He asked her if she was determined enough to undertake a desperate remedy.
“I would rather go into the grave alive than marry Paris." she said.
“Then take this vial. Friar Lawrence said. “Now, go home, and appear merry, and give your consent to marry Paris according to your father's desire. Then,tomorrow night, drink the contents of the vial. It will make you cold and lifeless for forty-two hours. Your family will think that you are dead. According to custom, they will leave you uncovered on a bier, to be buried in the family vault later. In the meantime, I will send a letter to Romeo detailing our plan. He will secretly come in the night and take you to Mantua."
Love, and the dread of marrying Paris, gave Juliet strength to agree to this horrible adventure. So she took the vial from the friar, promising to observe his directions.
