Tybalt and Mercutio fought viciously,until Mercutio fell and received a fatal blow from Tybalt. Seeing his friend Mercutio dead, Romeo lost his temper and began to fight Tybalt. After
exchanging heavy blows, Tybalt was killed by Romeo. All this happened in the middle of Verona at noon, and so the news of it quickly brought a crowd of the citizens to the spot.
Among them were the Lords Capulet and Montague, with their wives. They were soon followed by the prince. The prince was related to Mercutio, whom Tybalt had slain, and had often resented the Montagues and Capulets for disturbing the peace. So now the prince decided to put the law in strictest force against the offenders.
Benvolio was commanded by the prince to relate the whole incident. The prince, after careful consideration of the facts,, pronounced that Romeo was to be banished from Verona.
This was heavy news to Juliet, who had only been a bride for a few hours.
Now it seemed that she would forever be divorced. When she first heard the news,she at first gave way to “rage ”against Romeo, who had slain her dear cousin. But soon her rage gave way to love, and the tears which she shed for her dead cousin turned to tears of joy that her husband had survived. Then came fresh tears,and they were tears of grief for Romeo's banishment.
