1 / Model elephants' parade

A herd of life-size model elephants paraded through central London on Saturday to trumpet the idea that humans and wild animals can share space in this crowded world.

The 125 elephants, brought to London by the conservation group Elephant Family, are the work of indigenous people who live alongside real beasts in southern India's Nilgiri Hills.

Sculptors made birds to stand on the elephants. The organizers hope to highlight the need for coexistence with wild animals after lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down human activity and helped some threatened species recover.

Following the parade, the model elephants will be displayed in London parks and be on sale for 30,000 pounds each to raise funds for conservation efforts.

2 / Long working hours are a killer

Working long hours is killing hundreds of thousands of people a year in a worsening trend that may accelerate further due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization said on Monday. In the first global study of the loss of life associated with longer working hours, the paper in the journal Environment International showed that 745,000 people died from a stroke or heart disease associated with long working hours in 2016. That was an increase of nearly 30% from 2000.

The joint study, produced by WHO and the International Labour Organization, showed that most victims (72%) were men and were middle-aged or older. It also showed that people living in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific region were the most affected.

Overall, the study said that working 55 hours or more a week is associated with a 35% higher risk of stroke and a 17% higher risk of dying from ischemic heart disease, compared with a 35-40 hour working week.

3 / Video appears to show UFO

A dark object moves across the sky near a US Navy stealth ship, before suddenly veering into the water and disappearing. That’s what unfolds in a recently leaked video of an unidentified flying object spotted off the coast of San Diego.

Documentary filmmaker Jeremy Corbell shared the footage of the mysterious, spherical flying object on Instagram.

The Pentagon later confirmed that the video, believed to be from 2019, was taken by US Navy personnel. The latest footage is now being reviewed by a government task force, which will brief Congress on its findings next month.

However, the details of this latest sighting, like other sightings in the past, may remain classified. This is just the latest in a series of sightings of mysterious, unidentified flying objects. Last month, Corbell shared a video of another mysterious craft, shaped like an upside-down pyramid, flying near another US Navy ship.

4 / Kids receive first vaccine dose

At least 600,000 kids in the United States aged 12 to 15 have received their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, nearly a week after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended the Pfizer-BioNTech shot for the age group.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky revealed the latest numbers during a press briefing Tuesday, saying that about 3.5 million people younger than 18 are already vaccinated, according to agency data.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has recorded more than 3.9 million cases among children in the US, accounting for about 14% of total infections in the country.

While young people have a much lower risk of severe COVID-19 than older adults, they can, in some cases, become very ill, and 308 children have died. About 3,700 children with COVID-19 have gone on to have what's known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, or MIS-C.
