China's population will stay above 1.4 billion "for a certain period in future," said Ning Jizhe, head of the National Bureau of Statistics, at a press conference on Tuesday. "China's population will peak in the future, but there remains uncertainty as to when specifically it will happen," Ning said. Based on demographic trends in recent years, China's population growth will continue to slow down, he said. He noted the growth will also be affected by factors like the age structure, people's attitudes toward having children, the government's population policies, the cost of childbearing and parenting, medical service and health conditions. 
国家统计局局长宁吉喆在5月11日举行的新闻发布会上表示，预计在未来一段时间内我国人口总量会保持在14亿人以上。宁吉喆说，我国人口今后会达到峰值，但具体时间现在看还有不确定性。宁吉喆表示，从近年来我国人口发展变化的趋势看，今后的人口增速将继续放缓。同时，人口增长还受人口年龄结构、人们的生育观念、生育政策、生育成本、公共卫生和健康水平等经济社会因素的影响。

China's population on the mainland reached 1.41178 billion, growing 0.53% annually on average in the past decade according to data from the latest national census, conducted in 2020 and released by the NBS on Tuesday. The rate was slightly lower than the average annual growth of 0.57% from 2000 to 2010, according to the NBS. "Data shows China's population has continued to maintain slow growth in the past decade," Ning said. 
国家统计局5月11日发布的2020年第七次全国人口普查结果显示，全国人口共141178万人，过去十年间年均增长率是0.53%，比2000年到2010年的年平均增长率0.57%下降0.04个百分点。宁吉喆表示，数据表明，我国人口10年来继续保持低速增长态势。

Civil Code promotion campaign begins
多部门开展民法典宣传

China on Monday launched a campaign to promote the Civil Code among the public as May 28, 2021 marks the first year since its adoption. The campaign kicked off at a ceremony held Monday in the village of Shazhou in Central China's Hunan province. According to the plan of the campaign, which has been approved by the country's top legal authorities including the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the campaign aims to make the public more familiar with the code's content and principles. A Civil Code promotion campaign should be conducted annually every May, the plan noted. It also proposed promotion methods including lectures, knowledge contests and cultural activities.
《中华人民共和国民法典》将于5月28日迎来颁布一周年。日前，最高人民法院、最高人民检察院等部门联合下发通知，印发《"美好生活•民法典相伴"主题宣传方案》。5月10日，宣传启动仪式在湖南省沙洲村举行。方案要求，要使全社会了解熟悉民法典重要内容和基本原则。在每年五月份组织开展民法典宣传月活动，组织讲师团、民法典知识竞赛以及群众性法治文化活动等深入基层广泛宣讲。

Fans can't buy votes for contestants
选秀节目严禁'花钱买票'

Online shows are prohibited from having sections in which viewers spend money to buy votes for entertainment stars, according to a notice released on Monday by the Beijing Municipal Radio and Television Bureau. The shows are strictly forbidden from instigating or encouraging netizens to vote for their favorite online show competitors via materialistic approaches such as purchasing specific goods or memberships, the bureau said in a notice released on its WeChat account. No institution or individual is allowed to fabricate vote statistics or influence the results of the shows by buying votes, it added.
北京市广播电视局5月10日在其微信公众号上发布通知，要求网络综艺节目不得设置"观众为娱乐明星花钱买投票"环节。严禁刻意引导、鼓励网民采取购物、充会员等物质化手段为选手投票。严禁任何机构和个人以"花钱买票"等形式进行数据造假，干扰节目选拔。

US COVID death toll undercounted
美新冠疫情被'严重低估'

The US has undercounted the number of deaths caused by COVID-19, Anthony Fauci, top US infectious disease expert, said on Sunday. "You know, the model says that it's a significant amount, as you mentioned correctly, 900,000. But, you know, sometimes the models are right on line, sometimes they're a bit off," Fauci said in a TV program, responding to a question as to whether he believes the true death toll is as high as suggested by a new study from the University of Washington.
