I just thought I was gonna die in a car. I’m still shaking. I can’t believe I just did what I just did.

This is Lao Zhang. And this is about my harrowing experience doing a road trip.

Yesterday I drove from Hays, Kansas to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. It’s about a seven and a half hour drive.

When I got onto the highway in Kansas, the wind was so strong…it was pushing and pulling and just doing everything to the car, taking it completely out of my control.

The wind was so strong and I had both hands on the wheel and I felt like I was just fighting with this thing the whole time.

And every time I had to pass a truck…you know, the aerodynamics change and I felt like I was being sucked into the truck. And during that five hour stretch of driving, I saw three tractor-trailers that had overturned…had been blown over on the highway.

And I was so panicked that they were going to blow over on me when I was passing one of them, so…ooooh…anyway, I was really distressed about that, but after about five hours I got passed the windy part.

You have to understand, Kansas especially, but a lot of the Midwest here in the States, is flatland, it’s farmland, so there’s no trees and there’s no mountains, so the winds just go like crazy.

Ok, so I get through Kansas and the next state is Colorado. People love Colorado because it’s got the Rock Mountains and people love to go skiing and play in the snow.

However, driving in the snow is a completely different thing. So, as I get there, everything’s cool, until I start going up the mountain, and sure enough, the higher you go, the colder it gets.

So when I was at the top of the mountain, this is about two thousand nine-hundred meters, the snow was so strong and nothing was cleared off.

I couldn’t see anything but snow.  We call it a ‘white out.’ It was…all I could see was whiteness. And so I’m driving really slowly and I can’t see the…I thought I was going to drive off the side of the road.

And at one point I went too far to the side, because I didn’t know where the side was and my wheel caught the edge of the highway…and it started to pull me and the car almost started to slide. And I’m going, “Oh man…I don’t know how to do this.”

Now, luckily I was renting a car and it was a Jeep Cherokee, so, it had…I think it had four wheel drive. So, after I spun a little to the side, it got me right up again and I was straight and I was going straight.

So, ok, now I’m in the car. I’m shaking…cause I felt like I almost just crashed and suddenly I see a car in front of me so I have to stop.

There’s just all snow…there’s just white…and now I see this car and other cars in front of him and suddenly I’m just stopped at the top of the mountain in this snowstorm.

And I didn’t know why. There was just nothing. There was no cell service, I couldn’t do anything.

So I’m just sitting for about twenty people. And then some people who didn’t want to wait anymore, they were frustrated…they started going up the other side.

And then…you…but cars are supposed to be coming on the opposing side. So, a truck driver got really angry. And so he took this big truck and he turned his truck into the center of the road so nobody could pass him.

And as he did that, he turned on his lights and his horns. The he opens his door and he starts screaming and cursing at all of these people in their cars because they had come up the wrong side.

And I’m sitting in my car going, “Oh…oh my god…I’m gonna die on this mountain with these crazy human beings!”

So we stayed there about a half hour. And then finally…I think some car had just gotten stuck and they were just moving it out of the snow, so it took a while.

So finally, we start going back down the hill…the mountain…and as we’re going down the mountain, of course it gets warmer, so there’s less snow.

Finally, I can see the road again. And I was able to get all the way down the mountain and into the town. I was able to get rid of the car and meet my friend.

And boy, I never…I never want to drive in snow again. I want to stay here on the ranch and just chill.

No car. I’ll be walking.

Thanks for listening. I hope you’re doing well. I’ll talk to you soon.
