The irony of my life right now is that I was born in New York City, the most populous city here in the United States and I’m currently living in the state of Wyoming, which is the least populous state in the United States.
There are under six hundred thousand people living in this state. So here, I’d be referred to as a city slicker.
A city slicker, well, someone just like me…someone who comes from the big city and ends up trying to live and spend time out in the countryside, in the rural parts of the United States.
I’m Lao Zhang and here’s a little store of my life on the ranch in Wyoming.
This is truly a land of cowboys…real cowboys…just like the ones you’ve seen in the movies.
Big guys with big hats and big guns, riding big horses. It’s because this area is all filled with ranches. I’m living on a ranch right now.
Now, we don’t have any animals on this ranch at the moment, but this used to be a sheep ranch. So there are a lot of sheep ranches here and a lot of cattle ranches.
The ranch next door has over one thousand cattle. Other than that, there’s nothing else here. This is empty land; it’s unforgiving land.
We’re at high elevations here, about seven thousand feet. They call it the high desert. It’s over twenty miles from where I'm standing right now on this ranch, to get to the nearest convenience store and I mean a tiny little store with just a few items.
So there's no socializing, there’s no...life is The Ranch. When you live on a ranch, what you do your whole life, is you take care of the ranch.
The whole family participates together and you just…there are so many things to do...so many projects, things need to be fixed, the animas have to be moved around.
And a lot of them are very old. Where I’m standing right now, in this cabin where I’m living, is a hundred years old. The big house, the main house here where the family used to stay, is over a hundred years old.
So everything is broken down. The pipes are old. The doors don't close because, you know, the angles of everything have shifted.
And so everything keeps needing to be fixed. There’s always something to do, so there's no socializing. You don't go out. And if you did want to go out it's going to take you an hour or more just to get there.
And the most important part of now, is winter. It is only...today is November 1st of 2020. We’ve already had three snowstorms.
And one of them left six inches of snow on the ground, just the other day. It's still on the ground. So what happens here on the ranch, all you end up doing is talking about temperature, the weather…the pipes...are they frozen? Can the water get through?
The owner here, that's all he does is run around trying to fix…”wow, this broke…and this pipe broke…the toilet exploded yesterday.”
And so soon, it's going to be below zero everyday for almost four or five months, with snow happening every two or three days. And so life here really becomes survival.
It really makes me appreciate being here because even though now, you know, we have electricity and we even have WiFi, and, you know, we have heat and we have everything we need…
when you think about people who did this in 1920, not in 2020…in 1920 there was nothing here and somehow they survived and they thrived and they existed.
And they’re the ones who actually gave me the opportunity to be here today.
And probably the most interesting and the final element here that’s critical, everyday now, is fire.
I feel like all I do all the time, is light fires. In fact, when this ranch had the whole family living here, many years ago, there was one guy’s job…and his whole entire job twenty-four hours a day, was to keep…
I think there were fourteen fires that he had to keep lit constantly. So he would spend his time just going from one cabin or the house or from one room to another, just stoking the fire and keeping it lit so that nobody got cold.
So I am now my own fire starter. And it’s the one thing that I really have to learn to do well because very soon, it’s going to be freezing here on the ranch. My fire is going full-time at this moment. Twenty-four hours a day. And I’m getting better and better at keeping it going.
Thanks for listening, that’s a little bit about life on the ranch in Wyoming.
