When I was ten years old, I begged my father to get me a BB gun. And he did, but we had to go to the police station, he had to give his fingerprints…it’s all very regulated.

So now I had this gun and the first thing I did with the gun was go to my friend Jim’s house. And we went into the backyard and up in the tree there was a squirrel. And I shot the squirrel.

Now the BB gun is not really lethal. They’re only these little pellets. So, I hit the squirrel and it fell a little bit, but then it grabbed onto the tree and it was just making this horrible screeching sound.

And it was so disturbing to me that at that very moment I decided, no more guns…I was never gonna shoot anything or hunt anything or kill anything…I just wanted to be away from anything that had to do with guns.

Now, of course, I’m living here in Wyoming in the United States and it’s like the Wild West out here.

I’m Lao Zhang and this is a story of hunting in Wyoming.

It’s hunting season here in Wyoming, so for two weeks people can hunt deer. And then for two weeks people can hunt elk. It’s all very regulated, so people have to get a license and a tag and then they can come here and they can hunt.

Now, a tag for the deer is $372 and a tag for the elk is $690. So after they have their tag, they get their guns and they come here to the ranch.

And they stay in the cabins and they get up really early in the morning and they hunt all afternoon. And then they come back for some food and then they go back later in the evening and hunt until the sun goes down.

So it’s a real challenge for me because all these people talk about is guns and shooting and killing the animals. And it’s really the only thing on their mind.

The other day a woman was here and she was hunting and she got this big elk. And then they brought it back here and they hung it from the top of a tractor because they had to move it into her truck because then she brings it to the place to have it processed,   where they make the meat so that you can eat it.

But while they were transporting it on the tractor, it fell twice, onto the ground. And just sitting there watching this huge, massive dead animal just ‘thump’ to the ground was so disturbing.

Anyway, they finally got it into the truck and they took it…and…but she had taken out the heart and she brought the heart into the kitchen and she cooked the heart. It was this massive heart, it was like the size of a soccer ball. I did not eat any of the heart.

Anyway, it’s only two weeks and then two weeks. So, it’s a total of four weeks and it’s almost over and most of the hunters are gonna go home soon.

So, finally the ranch will be back to normal and it will be calm and peaceful and we won’t have to listen to any of those huge gunshots going off all day long.

So it’s another challenge for me here, on the ranch.

Thanks for listening, I’ll talk to you soon.
