The next morning all the village was at Muff Potter's trail. Injun Joe was there, too. Muff waited, a tired old man with a dirty face. The judge began the trial.

第二天早上村里所有人都来听证审判穆夫·波特。印江·乔也在，穆夫等待着，这老人疲惫已极，脸上脏兮兮的。法官开始审问了。

Questions, questions, questions. Answers, answers, answers. And the answers were all bad for Muff Potter.⑴

先是询问、询问、询问然后回答。回答、回答。所有的回答都对穆夫·波特不利。

'Yes, I found the knife in the graveyard, next to Doctor Robinson's body.'

“是的，我在坟场发现了这把刀，就在鲁宾逊医生的尸体旁。”

'Yes, that's Muff Potters knife. He always carries it.'

“是的，那是穆夫·波特的刀，他总是带着它。”

'Yes, I saw Muff Potter in the village that afternoon. He had the knife with him then.'

“是的，那天下午我在村里看到过穆夫·波特，当时他就带着那把刀。”

Muff Potter began to look more and more unhappy. Then the judge said: 'Call Thomas Sawyer!'

穆夫·波特的脸色越来越悲哀。这时法官说：“传唤托马斯·索亚！”

St Peters-burg sat up.⑵ What did young Tom Sawyer know? Everybody looked at him, and waited.

全村人都坐直了。小汤姆·索亚能知道什么呢？每个人都看着他，等待着。

'Thomas Sawyer, where were you on the seventeenth of June, at the hour of midnight?'⑶

“托马斯·索亚，6月17日的午夜12点钟，你在哪里？”

'In the graveyard.'

'Why?'

'I went there to see ghosts. With a--a--dead cat.'

St Peters-burg laughed, and the judge looked angry. 'And where were you in the graveyard, Thomas?'

全村人都笑了起来，法官看起来生气了。“你在坟场的什么地方，托马斯？”

'Behind the trees near Hoss Williams' grave.'

“在树丛后面，霍斯·威廉斯的坟附近。”

Injun Joe's face suddenly went white.

印江·乔的脸刷的一下就变白了。

'Now, my boy,' said the judge. 'Tell us your story.'

“好，孩子，”法官说，“告诉我们，你看到了什么。”

And so Tom told his story, and St Peters-burg sat and listened to him with open mouths.

接着汤姆讲述了他看到的事，所有人都坐在那儿，张大了嘴巴听着。

'... and then Muff Potter fell, and Injun Joe jumped with the knife and--'

“……然后穆夫·波特就倒下了，印江·乔跳起来，用刀——”

Crash! Injun Joe jumped through the window, and was out and away in a second.⑷

St Peters-burg loved Tom for a week. But Tom was not happy. Injun Joe was not in jail, and he was a dangerous man. Tom slept badly for weeks.⑸

整个星期，全村人都对汤姆赞不绝口，可汤姆并不高兴。印江·乔还没有被关起来，他是个危险分子。汤姆好几个星期都睡不好觉。

The slow summer days went by. Injun Joe did not come back to St Peters-burg, and Tom began to forget.

漫长的夏天渐渐过去。印江·乔没有回到圣彼得斯堡，汤则也渐渐地淡忘了这件事。
