“Where did he go?” said Jack.

“它去哪里了?”杰克说。

He and Annie peeked through the hole.

他和安妮从那个洞往里看。

They saw a long hallway. Burning torches lit the walls. Dark shadows loomed.

他们看见一条长长的走廊。燃烧的火把照亮了墙壁。深色的影子若隐若现。

“Let’s go in，” said Annie.

“我们进去吧。”安妮说。

“Wait，” said Jack.

“等等。”杰克说。

He pulled out the Egypt book and turned to the section on pyramids.

他拿出那本关于埃及的书，翻到有关金字塔的那一章。

He read the caption aloud：

大声读道：

Pyramids were sometimes called Houses of the Dead. They were nearly all solid stone，except for the burial chambers deep inside.

金字塔又被称为死人之屋。除了里面深处的墓室，它简直就是一个实心的巨大石堆。

“Wow. Let’s go there. To the burial chambers,” said Annie. “I bet a mummy’s there.”

“哇，咱们去吧，到墓室去。”安妮说，“我敢打赌木乃伊就在那里。”

Jack took a deep breath. Then he stepped out of the hot, bright sunlight into the cool, dark pyramid.

杰克深深地吸了口气，然后便从炽热、刺眼的日光底下跨入阴冷而黑暗的金字塔内部。

The hallway was silent.

走廊里寂静无声。

Floor, ceiling, walls—everything was stone.

地，天花板，墙壁——一切都是石头砌成的。

The floor slanted up from where they stood.

“We have to go farther inside,” said Annie.

“我们再往里走一点。”安妮说。

“Right,” said Jack. “But stay close behind me. Don’t talk. Don’t—”

“Go!Just go!” said Annie. She gave him a little push.

“走吧!走就是了!”安妮说着轻轻推了杰克一把。

Jack started up the slanting floor of the hallway.

杰克开始沿着倾斜的走廊往前走。

Where was the cat? The hallway went on and on.

那只猫在哪里?走廊一直向前延伸着。

“Wait,” said Jack. “I want to look at the book.”

“等等。”杰克说，“我想看看那本书。”

He opened the Egypt book again. He held it below a torch on the wall. The book showed a picture of the inside of the pyramid.

他再次翻开那本关于埃及的书，把它举到一个火把的下面。书上画着一幅金字塔内部的图画。

“The burial chamber is in the middle of the pyramid. See?” Jack said. He pointed to the picture. “It seems to be straight ahead.”

“墓室在金字塔的中部。看见没有?”杰克说，它指了指那幅画。“好像就在前面。”

Jack tucked the book under his arm. Then they headed deeper into the pyramid.

杰克把书塞在胳膊下面。然后两人继续朝金字塔内部走去。

Soon the floor became flat. The air felt different. Musty and stale.

很快地就不再倾斜了。空气仿佛都不同了，充满了霉腐味儿。

Jack opened the book again. “I think we’re almost at the burial chamber.See the picture? The hallway slants up. Then it gets flat. Then you come to the chamber. See, look—”

杰克再次翻开书。“我想我们差不多已到墓室了。看到这幅画没有?走廊一路上坡，然后变得平坦，这样你就进入墓室了。看——”

“Eee-eee!” A strange cry shot through the pyramid.

“噫——!”一阵奇怪的叫声突然在金字塔里响了起来。

Jack dropped the Egypt book.

杰克吓得把书都掉到地上了。

Out of the shadows flew a white figure.

一个白影突然从阴影里闪了出来。

It swooshed toward them!

它嗖的一声窜到杰克和安妮面前。

A mummy!

是一个木乃伊!

“It’s alive!” Annie shouted.

“他是活的!”安妮惊叫道。
