具象理解：一条跨河而建的桥梁

The bridge is over the river.

↓

1.桥梁是在河流的上面

2. 桥梁是从河的一边建到河的另一边

3. 桥梁可以盖住一部分河流

所以，该词包括三层含义：

1.在...之上

2.从一边到另一边

3.覆盖

一、在……之上

在...上面：on, above和over

它们的区别是？

当一事物over另一事物时，两者不一定接触

1.高于，形成覆盖

Eg.

（1）他为她打着伞。

直译：He hold an umbrella for her.

比较：He hold an umbrella over her.

2）桌子上挂着一盏台灯。

There was a lamp over the table.

2.覆盖→上下级关系

Eg.

(1)She is over me.她是我上司。

=I’m under her.

(2) There in only one person over him.

只有一个人比他职位高。

(3)He has the authority over 30 people.

他拥有30个人的管理权限。

3.超出了某个高度

→延用到数字中

(1)over an hour  

超过一小时

(2)My salary is over 5000. 

我的工资超过5000

二、从一边到另一边

1.表达某种行为

（1）The ball flew over the wall. 

球飞到墙那边去了。

这句话中的“那边”并不需要用名词来翻译，因为over这个词本来就包含了另一边的意思。

（2）She jumped over the fence.

她跳过了栅栏

（3）He looked back over his shoulder. 

他从肩膀头往后看。

（4）look over 检查、翻阅

Please look over the report.

请检查一下报告。

look是动作，而over是动作的路径。look over the report就是指把报告从头看到尾的意思，也就是从一边到另一边。

2. 从一个时间点到另一个时间点

She has not changed much over the years. 

经过这几年，她没怎么变。

for year& over year

for仅仅能说明这几年的累计时间，而over则特别强调从之前的某一年到现在，也就是从之前的一个时间到现在这个时间点，这是一个过程

He created an airplane over a period of ten years. 

他花十年的时间造了一架飞机。

3.over+时间/场合/节日

Let's talk about it at lunch.

( 强调在吃午饭这个场合谈，也可以只谈一会儿)

Let's talk about it over lunch.

( 强调整个午餐时间都要谈这个事)

4.over+工具

She wouldn't tell me over the phone.

她不想在电话里告诉我。

自主比较：over the phone  &  onthe phone

5.摆脱

摆脱也是一个过程，是从最初经历到与之说再见的过程，也可以理解成是从一边到另一边。

（1）I'm not quite over the cold I caught last week.

我上周得的感冒还没怎么好。

（2）We're over the worst of the recession.

我们终于渡过了经济最萧条的时候。

（3）she's still not over her last boyfriend.

她还是对他的前男友念念不忘。

三、覆盖

比较：

(1)她把毛毯盖在孩子身上。

She put a blanket on the baby.

She put a blanket over the baby.

over有覆盖的意思，而on只是放在另一个物体上面就可以

(2)他在衬衫上面穿了一件外套

误：He wears a coat on his shirt.

正：He wears a coat over his shirt.

all over

They've traveled all over the world.

他们整个世界都游遍了。
