【本章大意】

维克托通过非法手段收集人体各部分并进行研究。通过多年努力，他利用电力成功地赋予了拼凑起来的人体生命。

在19世纪早期，药物方面已有一些重要的进步，特别是对人类尸体解剖进行研究的解剖学相当先进。在这部小说中，维克托·弗兰肯斯坦在试图创造他的怪物之前，就对人体解剖学有所研究。

但是，以现代人的观点，那个时期的医学仍然还是很原始。医生们对细菌的了解知之甚少。那时候，接种疫苗才刚刚被发现，也不普遍，没有抗生素。在卫生状况很差的拥挤的城市里，传染性疾病传播得很快，病死了很多人。外科医生穿着他们的便衣进行手术，不用麻醉剂，也没有杀菌的设备，一半的病人死于手术本身的感染。

对于怀孕的女人来说，生孩子是一件很危险的事。在家庭中，小孩子特别容易受到疾病的攻击，很多孩子没有活过童年。

Victor became more and more obsessed with his work. He was thin and pale.

In secret he began to collect parts of bodies for his experiments.

He paid criminals to help him.

All right. But I want half of the money now.

Now I have everything I need.

Finally he was ready.

维克托越来越痴迷于工作。他又瘦又憔悴。

我很担心你。你饮食不规律，你会病倒的。

我一定要完成我做的工作。

他研究解剖学，研究尸体。

我如果不研究死亡，又怎么可以理解生命呢？

为了实验，他私下里开始收集人体的各部分。

He worked night and day, without sleeping.

First I have to join the parts together.

He must be strong. He will be bigger than a normal human being.

After years of study he was an expert in human anatomy.

The creature is ready now. But can I really give him life?

He moved the creature to a container filled with liquid.

He looked out of the window.

There are black clouds in the sky. Tonight there will be a storm.

Victor connected wires from the mast to the container.

Now I must wait.

During the night there was a storm.

Lightning flashed across the sky.

The moment of truth has come! Will the creature live?

He felt the power of the electricity in the room.

The wires are burning hot. I cannot touch them.

He ran to where the creature was lying.

Something is happening in there.

维克托把天线杆上的电线连接到容器上。

现在，我必须等。

The container moved a little. He looked inside.

My God! The experiment works. His eyes are open!

Victor moved back. The container began to open slowly and a head appeared.

What a hideous face! I wanted to create life but this is a monster!

Victor ran out of the laboratory and locked the door.

容器移动了一点点，他往里面瞅了瞅。

天啊！实验成功了。他的眼睛是睁着的。

维克托往后退了一下。容器慢慢打开，一个头出现在他的眼前。
