在以后的几十年里，意大利的两位科学家路易吉·伽伐尼和卡特亚历山大·沃尔特，用电流做了最初的几次实验。在18世纪80年代，伽伐尼(1737-1798)因他对动物生理学进行的调查研究闻名于世。他发现电流可以使肌肉和神经收缩，用刚刚杀死的青蛙做试验加以论证。当他将电流通过青蛙的身体时，青蛙的腿颤动，就像是活着一样。他的研究跟弗兰肯斯坦在小说里所做的实验有很多共同之处。

Ingolstadt was a university town and there were many students in the streets.

Victor took his place for the first lesson.

Who is the teacher?

It's Professor Waldman. He teaches chemistry.

He listened with fascination.

Today is an important moment in your lives as you begin the study of science. Through science we can explore the secrets of nature. We can discover new unlimited powers.

Victor was very excited.

This is what I want to do. I want to become a great scientist and make discoveries to help people.

He visited Professor Waldman in his home to ask for advice.

You are very ambitious, Victor. I will help you as much as I can.

Victor concentrated totally on his studies for two years.

His teachers realized that he was a brilliant student.

His name is Victor Frankenstein. One day he will be a great scientist.

Professor Waldman took a special interest in him.

What are you working at, Victor?

I am trying to find out how life begins.

Can we put back life into something which is dead? What do you think, Professor?

He built a high mast on the roof.

I want to catch the lightning and use electricity in my experiments.

He hasn't been home for two years. And now he doesn't even answer our letters.

It's because of his work. It's the most important thing in his life.

I don't understand it. Perhaps Henry can visit him and find out if he is all right.
