I Want Two Birthdays 我想要两个生日

It was the Little Princess's birthday.

到了小公主生日的这天了。

She had a royal cake and lots of presents.

她收到了一个皇家蛋糕还有很多很多礼物。

"Mum," she asked,

“嗯~”她问道，

"Why do you have TWO birthdays, and I only have one?"

“为什么你有两个生日，而我只有一个呢？”

"Well,"  said the Queen," queens always have two birthdays.

“这个嘛，”王后说，“王后总是有两个生日的。

There's one for me to share with you, 

一个是要和你们庆祝的生日，

and one to share with all the people."

还有一个是和所有臣民庆祝的生日。”

"I want two birthdays then!" said the Little Princess.

“那我也要两个生日！”小公主说。

So the Prime Minister put two birthdays in the diary for the Little Princess.

然后首相大人就把小公主要有两个生日这件事提上了日程。

One in the autumn, when she was born,

一个生日在秋天，小公主出生的时候，

and one in the winter, to cheer things up.

另一个在冬天，来振作人心。

Two birthdays meant two cakes and twice as many presents every year.

有两个生日就意味着每年有两个蛋糕，两倍的生日礼物。

"This is fun!" said the Little Princess.

“这太棒了！”小公主说。

"But THREE birthdays would be even better.

“但是如果有三个生日就更好了。”

So three birthdays were put into the diary ...

于是首相大人又在给小公主定三个生日的计划了。

...one in the autumn shen she was born,

...一个在她出生的秋天，

one in the winter to cheer things up,and in the spring.

一个在冬天来振作人心，还有一个在春天。

"Can't leave summer out," said the Little Princess.

“我们不能漏了夏天啊，”小公主说。

"I want FOUR birthdays!"

“我想要四个生日！”

The Little Princess loved her birthdays.

小公主喜欢过生日。

She loved getting up on the special day, and getting specially clean.

她喜欢在那个特别的日子起床，然后把自己特别梳洗一下。

She loved the special cakes and all the special presents.

她喜欢那些特别的蛋糕和所有特别的礼物。

"Why can't I have MORE special birthdays?" she thought.

“为什么我不能有更多特别的生日呢？”她想着。

So she had a word with the Prime Minister, and she had more birthdays put into the diary.

于是，她去和首相大人聊了一下，然后给自己定了更多的生日。

Soon she had a birthday on every day of the year.

很快，一年的每一天都成了小公主的生日。

So every day,the Cook had to make another cake.

所以每一天，厨师都要再做一个蛋糕。

But they got smaller.

但是蛋糕越做越小了。

And every day, everybody had to buy presents.

而且每一天，大家都得给小公主买礼物。

But they were not as nice.

但是他们没有以前那么精美了。

The Admiral gave her a piece of chewing gum that he had finished chewing.

海军司令给了她一块自己嚼过的口香糖。

The General gave her a piece of string with a knot in it.

将军给了她一根打了结的绳子。

The Maid gave her a broken peg.

女仆给了她一根坏了的琴栓。

The next day,the King gave her a broken pencil.

第二天，国王给了她一支折断的铅笔。

"Tomorrow," he said,

“明天，”国王说，

"you can have an old pen with no ink in it."

“如果那支旧钢笔要是没水了，我就把它给你。”

"POO!" said the Little Princess.

“不是吧！”小公主说。

"There are rotten presents."

“这些礼物太烂了。”

The Little Princess spat out that day's birthday cake.

小公主把那天的生日蛋糕也吐出来了。

"POO!" she said." It's got no currants or anything in it!"

“什么呀！”她说，“里面没有葡萄干，什么都没有！”

And last week's birthdays cards were still on the mantlepiece.

上周的生日贺卡还放在壁炉上呢。

Every day, the Little Princess had to stay specially clean for her special birthday parties, 

每一天，小公主都要为她特别的生日保持着特别干净的状态，

but everyone stopeed coming, 

但是大家都不来了，

because they couldn't afford the presents.

因为他们都已经买不起礼物了。

At last, Gilbert was the only one at the Little Princess's party.

最后，吉伯特成了小公主生日宴会上唯一的客人。

"Where's my present,Gilbert?" she said.

“我的礼物在哪，吉伯特？”她问道。

"Haven't got one,' cos I'm only a toy bear,"said Gilbert.

“我没准备礼物，因为我只是一只玩具熊啊，”吉伯特说。

"Happy birthday!" 

“生日快乐！”

At least,that's what she thought he said.

至少，小公主想吉伯特会这么说。

The very next day, the Maid came into the Princess's room.

到了第二天，女仆来到了小公主的房间。

"Happy Birthday,Princess," she said. 

“公主生日快乐，”她说。

"Get up and get special clean for your birthday.

“快起床为你的生日好好梳洗一下吧。

You've got another party, you know."

你又要有另一个聚会了，你知道的。”

"Oh NO!" groaned the Little Princess.

“天哪，不要！”小公主咆哮起来。。

"Not again!

“又来吗？

Why can't I play like I used to?

我就不能和我以前那样玩吗？

Why can't I get dirty?"

我就不能脏一点吗？

"But it's not mine…"

“但那不是我的...”

"…IT'S GILBERT'S!"

“...是吉尔伯特的！”

"Because today is your BIRTHDAY," said the Maid.

“因为今天是你的生日啊，”女仆说。

"Put on this nice clean crown."

“戴上这顶精美干净的皇冠吧。”

"EVERY DAY is my birthday!" cried the Little Princess.

每！一！天！都是我的生日！”小公主叫起来。

"I want a SPECIAL day,different to all the others."

“我想有一个特别的日子，对其他人来说不同的日子。”

"We must go and see your mum and dad then," said the Maid.

“那我们得去找你的爸爸妈妈谈一谈，”女仆说。

"HMMM!" hmmmed the King. 

“嗯~”国王开始思考起来。

"What you need is an unbirthday,

“你需要的是一个非生日日，

just one unbirthday every year, and that will be your special day!"

就是一年之中你不过生日的那天，那就是你特别的日子！”

"Wheee!" squealed the Little Princess.

“嘿！”小公主尖叫起来。

"Lovely, what day shall I have my unbirthday on?"

“不错诶，我非生日日应该选在哪天呢？”

"How about the day you were born?

你出生的那天怎么样？

We can all remember that,and it's next Wednesday."

我们都记得，就在下个周三。”

The Little Princess was SO excited.

小公主超激动的。

She had to wait a whole week until her unbirthday arrived ...

她必须等待整整一周直到她非生日的那天 ...

and when it did arrive ...

当那天来临的时候 ...

...the Cook baked a VERY special unbirthday cake and everyone brought VERY special day.

...厨师为她做了一个特别的非生日蛋糕，每个人都在那天给她买了非常特别的礼物。

And she had to wait a whole year until the next one!

接着她得再等整整一年才会有下一个非生日日啦！

"I wish I had an unbirthday every day!" she said.

“我真想每天都过非生日日！”她说。

"If you did,then it wouldn't be special, would it?" said the Maid.

“如果你这么做了，那就没有特别的日子了哦，是不是？”女仆说。
