三种激情（I）

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and the unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.

三种激情，纯朴却又势不可挡，已经主宰了我的生活：最爱情的渴望、对知识的探求、对于人类的困难怀着承受不了的怜惜。

These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reacting to the very verge of despair.

这些激情，犹如狂风，吹得我忽东忽西，来去不定，越过痛楚的深渊，濒于绝望的边缘。

I have sought love, first, because it bring ecstasy --- ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy.

我追求爱情，首先是因为它带来狂喜——莫大的狂喜，为了得到一时的喜悦，我往往会牺牲生活中其他的一切。

I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness --- that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss.

我追求爱情，其次是因为它能消除寂寞——那种可怕的寂寞，陷入其中，令人战栗的意识便在世界的边缘之上洞见到冷漠无底、死气沉沉的深渊。

I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined.

我追求爱情，因为在爱情的神秘的缩影中，我看到了圣贤和诗人想象的天堂的景象。

This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what --- at last --- I have found.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

怀着同样的激情，我追求知识。我希望理解芸芸众生的心灵。我希望知道星星为什么闪耀。我也力求领悟毕达哥拉斯的力量，即为什么流变之上数支配一切。这方面我小有所成，不过不算大。
