As the economic growth is slowing down, many companies are cutting jobs these days.
My friend Joey told me about his special talk with his boss recently.
Last week, the secretary told Joey that his boss Mr. Harmsworth would see him.
As we know, if you boss wants to talk to you, it is usually not a good sign.
So Joey had butterflies in his stomach when he entered his boss’s office.
Harmsworth
Mr. Harmsworth looked very serious and didn’t even look up from his desk.
Joey
Joey was sure that his boss was going to tell him some bad news.
Just as he had expected, Mr. Harmsworth asked him to take a seat, and said the company was not doing well.
The sales of their products had dropped a lot so the company was not able to pay such large salaries.
Twenty people had already been laid off and Joey thought it was his turn.
He became so anxious that he could even hear his heart pounding.
Joey
Joey knew he could not afford to lose his job as he had to support his family.
So he tried to ask his boss to give him one more chance.
“Mr. Harmsworth,” Joey said in a weak voice.
But his boss didn’t even let him finish his words.
“Don’t interrupt.” Mr. Harmswoth finally looked up and said, “Joey, I have to tell you that ... you will be promoted to sales manager and you will receive an extra thousand pounds a year. Congratulations!!”
As Joey learned it was actually good news, he was blown away and burst into laughter.

Good News or Bad News: Which Do You Want First?
Tell bad news before good news。
Lower others’ expectation but deliver more.
Question 1:Do you want to hear the good news or the bad news first?
Studies showed that an overwhelming majority(绝大多数)—more than 75 percent—of news-receivers wanted the bad news first.
Angela Legg解释说:
"If people know they are going to get bad news, they would rather get it over with."
【get it over with: 赶紧结束,让事情过去】
Then, if there is good news to follow, "you end on a high note."
Question 2:Do you want to tell the good news or the bad news first?
Most news givers—between 65 and 70 percent—chose to give good news first, then the bad news.
"When news givers go into a conversation, they are anxious. No one enjoys giving bad news.
But they don't understand that having to wait for bad news makes the news receivers more anxious.
What is the best strategy for communication ?
That depends on your goal.
If the goal is to make people feel good and accept the bad news, you will tell bad news first then good news.
You : Mike, I got bad news for you. Your car was stolen.
Mike: What ???? My car was stolen ? Are you kidding me ?
You: But the good news is the police have caught the thief.
Mike: Thank God.
But if you wish to get someone to change a behavior, a better strategy is to tell good news first then bad news.
Hey, Peter, I got good news for you. Your checkup result is pretty good.
But I have to say you are still a little bit overweight. This can lead to some serious diseases if you don’t do anything about it.
