My reasons for hope are very simple. Because a lot of people can't believe that I can possibly have hope, because I've seen so much destruction and harm and cruelty and all the rest of it.

My first reason for hope is the energy, commitment and dedication of young people. Once they know the problems and are empowered to take action.

My second reason for hope is this extraordinary intellect of ours. The biggest problem is how the most intellectual creature to ever walk the earth is destroying their only home. And it seems there is a disconnect between clever brain and human heart: love and compassion.

But the hope is we do learn to link head and heart, to work in harmony. And already the most amazing scientific innovations have been invented to help us live in greater harmony. And if each one of us tries in our own life to leave as light as possible ecological footprint then we'll start to see a difference.

Another reason for hope: the resilience of nature. Destroy an area; give it time, give it a chance, maybe give it some help. And things can be restored.

You have environments all over Australia where at one time there was a lot of damage and now, thanks to conservationists, things have improved. You have animals, on the brink of extinction that, thanks to conservationists, have been given another chance.

And then there's social media, which we all know can be used for very bad purposes and there's a lot of misinformation about there. But at the same time we can bring together people from all over the world who care about, for example, climate change. Or who care about saving a particular species, bring them together, make their voices louder and louder until even the corrupt politicians have to take notice.

And finally the indomitable human spirit: the people who tackle the impossible. Like the people tackling the poaching of the last rhinos. They're not going to give up. And in some places they're succeeding.

And I'm always telling people in my talks, every single one of us has that same indomitable spirit. We just have to nurture it. And let it free to make an impact on the world around us.
