1. Detective  n. 侦探

（1）A detective story or novel.

私家侦探：private detective

谈到私家侦探，会想到：Sherlock Holmes.

（2）词源：detect 

v.探测，发现（尤其是不容易发现的东西）

如：

你去看牙医，医生发现了你的牙蛀了个洞。

The dentist detected a hole in one of my teeth.

医院里用仪器可以查出癌症。

Cancers can be detected by using special equipment.

如果发现得早，许多种癌症都可以治愈。

Many forms of cancer can be cured if detected early.

lie detector 测谎仪

警察可以用来测试嫌疑犯是否撒谎。

The police can use the lie detector to know if the suspect is lying.

（1） air

引申：

3. Expect v.期待，预期

（1） 准确理解：If you expect something to happen, you believe it will happen.

如：你过生日的时候，请了许多朋友，你认为他们会来，但有些没有来（听记）

这令你感到非常意外。

你可以说It was totally unexpected.

生活中有很多事都是出乎预料之外的。

A lot of things in life are unexpected.

如：

2008年北京奥运会，大家都期待刘翔在家门口能夺冠，万万没想到，刘翔因伤退赛。

During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, it was totally unexpected that ng dropped out of [或exit] the 110m hurdles due to his injury.

（2） wait vs. expect

wait：动作上的等待

expect：心理上的期待、预期

如: 听说一个明星要来，很多粉丝到机场去等待，期待明星出现

A lot of fans are waiting at the airport and expecting the super star to come.

成语守株待兔的英文

守株：

守就是等待：wait, 树桩：tree stump

守株：wait beside the tree stump  

待兔：

待，期待：expect, 兔子：hare表示野兔

expect the hare to come and kill itself again.

完整：A man was waiting beside the tree stump and expecting the hare to

come and kill itself again.

（3） 特别期待，热切期待，就要用Look forward to

比如:马上就要放假，你准备去巴黎旅行,你特别期待：（听记）

书信的最后，期待您的回信：

I am looking forward to your reply at your earliest convenience.

我们热切期待与您见面：I am looking forward to meeting you.

特别注意：expect还有一个很重要的意思

记得我在学英语时，认识了老外朋友，有一次聊天他说：My wife is expecting.

我不理解，就问: What is she expecting？

他笑了说：She is expecting a baby，I mean she is pregnant.  

我才恍然大悟：原来She is expecting就是怀孕的委婉说法。

就像我们中文中说：她有了。

于是我赶紧说：Congratulations！

4.Valuable  adj.贵重的

（1）Valuable来自value价值，同义词是precious

生命中有很多有价值的东西：如友情、爱情、时间、爱好、工作、健康

There are a lot of valuable things in life: friendship, love, time, hobbies, work, and health.

随着我们长大，我们会不断问自己一个问题：

As we grow up , we will ask ourselves :

人生中最有价值的东西是什么？（听记）

当然，对于这个问题，人们有不同的答案。

People have different answers to this question. Because, we have different values （复数表示价值观念）.

一个哲人曾经说：

If you wanna be truly happy, you have to know what is the most valuable in your life.

如果你想真正的快乐，你必须知道在你的人生中什么是最重要的。而不是活在别人的世界里。

（2）valuable vs. precious

valuable 强调贵重，价值高

precious 更强调，珍贵不能浪费    

If you say something is precious, you mean it is valuable and important and

should not be wasted or used without care

时间宝贵：Time is precious. Don’t waste it.

春雨贵如油：Spring rain is as precious as oil.

另外：有些固定的用法：

贵金属 Precious metal  

宝石 Precious stones

红宝石 ruby ['rubi]

翡翠、绿宝石 emerald  ['ɛmərəld]

Rubies and emeralds are precious stones.

（3）英文词尾也叫后缀，后缀less表示没有

Value: 价值，valueless:没有价值

Care: 注意，careless:不小心，马虎

Self: 自己，selfless:无私的， 自私：selfish.

Hope: 希望，hopeless:绝望

She felt hopeless她感到绝望。

Price：价格，priceless:无价的

极其珍贵=extremely valuable

无价之宝：priceless treasure.  

如：

健康是无价的: Good health is priceless.

爱是无价的: Love is priceless

5. Diamond n.钻石（可数或不可数）

钻石不仅仅是最珍贵的东西，而且是世界上最硬的物质。

Diamond is not only one of the most valuable things, but also the hardest material in the world.

结婚戴的钻戒：

a diamond ring 钻戒

a diamond necklace 钻石项链

diamonds 扑克牌的一种花色：方块

Diamonds（表示整体，当作单数主语） is one of the four suits in a deck of cards.

哪种花色像钻石？方块。

There are four suits/sets in a deck of cards.  一幅牌中有4种花色

 Hearts    红心

 Spades    黑桃（原意小铲子）

6. Steal v.偷窃

（1）steal sth from sb

If someone steals something from you, he/she takes it from you without attracting your attention.

（2）steal和rob：抢的区别

场景：如果小偷光顾你家，你的钱包被偷了，你报警说：我遭窃了

应该说：I was stolen还是I was robbed呢？

可能很多同学会脱口说，I was stolen.

正确的说法是, I was robbed.

英文中偷和抢并没有分那么清楚：rob牛津词典的英文解释是：to steal money or property from a person or place；

steal和rob的本质，是作用的对象不同.

Steal的对象是被盗走的东西，

rob的对象是受害者，可以是地方或人

如果你说，我家遭窃了：应该怎么说？

A. my house was stolen

B. my house was robbed

有同学说，这个总应该是A吧。

如果是A,警察会认为，小偷到你们家，把房子连根拔起拖走了。

所以应该说：My house was robbed.

银行遭窃了：（听记）

一百万美金被盗：One million dollars were stolen.

7. Main adj.主要的

一个城市的主干道：main street / road

一篇文章的中心思想：main point / idea

很多阅读考试：What is the main idea of this passage ?

西餐的主菜：main course （course可以指一道菜）

Mainland：大陆

中国内地：Mainland China 

or The Chinese mainland

Mainly：主要地

8. guard  n.警戒，护卫

（1）Keep guard  站岗守卫

如：Two policemen are keeping guard at the entrance.

有两个警察在入口处站岗

（2）guard也可以指警卫员，卫兵

有一种警卫员叫：Bodyguard 保镖

在游泳场有一种人叫：lifeguard 救生员

公共场合的保安：Security guard

（3）大写的Guards就指欧洲一些国家的皇家禁卫军，如英国皇家禁卫军，叫：the Guards，相当于我们中国古代皇帝的御林军

（4）guard v.作为动词就表示守卫

可以记一句话：一个卫兵正在守卫宝藏

A guard is guarding the treasure.

9. Stone n.石头

和石头有关的有趣表达：

（1）说人铁石心肠，冷酷无情，没人情味

 He has a heart of stone.

（2）一箭双雕，一石二鸟

Kill two birds with one stone.

10. Sand  n.沙子

有一句名言：

infinity：无穷无尽

eternity：永恒

李叔同（弘一法师）大师的翻译：

一沙一世界，一花一天国，

君掌盛无边，刹那含永劫。

翻得特别好，一个人的内心有多丰富，他的世界就有多大。

如瑞士思想家阿米尔（Amiel ）所说：

“Any landscape is a condition of the spirit.”

一片自然风景是一个心灵的境界。

他还说：

The man who has no inner life is the slave of his surroundings.

一个没有内心世界的人就是环境的奴隶
