Even back in the late 1980s, I found young people high school, university were losing hope and they were angry, depressed or just apathetic. And when I talked to them, they all said more or less the same: You've destroyed our future, and there's nothing we can do about it.

So indeed we are destroying the future of our young people, but it's not too late to do something about it. So that's why Roots&Shoots began in Tanzania with 12 high school students.

And they got their friends involved and we had meetings, and we decided that the main message would be every one of us makes an impact on the planet. Every single day and we can choose what sort of impact we make.

And that because everything in this life is interrelated that each group would choose projects to help people, to help animals, to help the environment.

We have campaigns like tree planting, it's all over the world. Right campaigns raising money for our sanctuaries in Africa, for example. But the other projects, the children unless they're very small they can choose. So it's bottom up and not top down.

And so they'll choose tree planting, clearing up litter of a beach, off the streets, putting in bird boxes bat boxes making what they're calling insect or bug hotels, piles of wood which in insects can creep into and live.

You know, the children are so imaginative, this is the great thing. Children have imagination, but they're not always required to use it. They've just told do this, do this, do this.

But if you give a child a problem and say what can you do? What do you think would be good to do about climate change? What do you think would be good to do about this that or the other? And they come up with amazing ideas.
