With 8 billion people, who decides your next job, you or society

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “This year’s World Population Day falls during a milestone year, when we anticipate the birth of the Earth’s eight billionth inhabitant. This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity, and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates.” Later he added, “At the same time, it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitments to one another.”

This is the peak of the population, today the not having children rate is high, and we are facing a huge decline in the birth rate in the upcoming years. Many experts said, to avoid human extinction, people should have children. Yet there’re some opposite voices. There’s this environmental movement formed the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement that calls for all people to abstain from reproduction in order to cause the gradual voluntary extinction of humankind. In the group's view, it would prevent environmental degradation. The group states that a decrease in the human population would prevent a significant amount of human-caused suffering.

Among all these mentalities, which one should we follow? Should we try to keep the human race surviving? Do we let society choose our jobs or do we do it per our own will? If we don’t prioritize society’s needs but our own, why do we even try to make human beings survive? If we want us human race to survive? How to distribute the resources to help us survive? The resources for living and industry, how to distribute them? We can live without some resources, but some we can’t, like food, mental needs, and medication.

Does society automatically adjust the needs? Or do we as individuals, need to choose what society needs most accordingly depending on the needs and time? For instance, if at the moment medication is the biggest problem in our society, then people who work with those will get a higher wage; if it’s mental needs, then people who work with those will get a higher wage. Will our society adjust this based on needs and time? If not, what should we do as individuals?

For example, there’s a huge lack of psychiatrists in the whole world, especially in the US, and for the minority, as they want to talk to someone they can relate to, otherwise, it will be easier to underestimate the hardship they have been through.

And there're a lot of places not having enough doctors and teachers, but the society doesn’t provide enough income and education for these groups, naturally, we as individuals will be drawn to the highly paid and easier-to-get-to jobs, like IT today.

As human beings, we should think about what to choose regardless of what society provides. And today with 8 billion people in the world, who decides your next job, you or society?
